Im not sure what it costs but there is a code reader available. You really should have the timer though.

Brett can correct me if Im wrong but I would think you have an issue with the glow pin. (due to the white smoke). You could try running it on kerosene for 45 minutes and see if that cleans it up.

Or give James at Espar a call....1-800-387-4800 x2282

is this James a technician or support staff kinda guy?

My espar runs perfectly fine when it runs.....no excessive smoke or anything-only when it flames out does the thing billow out smoke. My garage was all hazy thismorning when it was running inside..

Looking at the extension, I would say he is Espar technical services. The guys that get to answer all of my odd ball questions, and trust me if I am resorting to calling there it is weird. They will be able to give you a good basic trouble shooting how too, and you can go from there.

k, i gave James ( a technical Support guy ) a call and he recommended 2 things that usually fixes 90% of the issues.

1, a yearly service is recommended that involves replacing the screen infront of the glow pin. this screen is a device that atomizes the fuel before the glow pin. It can become plugged & reduces the units ability to atomize fuel.

2, since i have never done the yearly service ( 2 yrs old ), James recommended the Kerosene thing Dr. Evil mentioned. It is supposed to help remove carbon buildup in the burner box.

I'm going to try the kerosene thing first, and go from there. I can't remember how the fuel line hooks up to the unit-if there is just a clamp or something to the rigid plastic fuel line. Anyone got an answer on this for me?

Yes, James is one of their techs.

YOU SHOULD NEVER RUN THE ESPAR IN A GARAGE...better take a peak at your manual.

Should be available on the espar website, in the downloads section.

That may be...that would be easier than emailing it. I will post the link for you guys if I can find it.

The tech made it sound like it was some secret memo or something.

054 Flame cutout in high mode Heater has started successfully the flame has extinguished.
Check fuel supply. Check combustion air and exhaust flow.

I get this on occasionally. It usually stays running on the second start.

I could not find that document on the website. There is a blurb in the manual that tells you how to clear codes but not how to unlock the unit after hard codes are set.

PM me your email address if you would like it.

Brett - can you tell us what maintenance has to be done yearly on these things?

I recently installed my heater after pulling it off my other truck. It sat in a box for a couple of years as well. After reinstalling it - it has ran good until a couple of days ago. I have never really done any maintenance and its caught up to me. Im getting the F52 code and it just stuts down. I tried running it on straight Kerosene last night - still throwing F52.

Apparantely, there is a screen on the Fuel inlet? or at the glowpin?

Yeah thanks, its working fine now. Have had this a few times too. But did a bit more looking around, and should correct what I mentioned above about the 10 faults causing the unit to "lock", or interlock as they call it. That would happen for 2 reasons, according to this repair and troubleshooting document http://www.bigtrucker.co.uk/files/d5w.pdf:

Reasons for interlocking of control unit
• Overheat
If the HYDRONIC overheats 10 times in succession — fault
012 — fault message F15 is displayed, i.e. the control unit is
interlocked.
• Too many failed starts
If the HYDRONIC performs 10 unsuccessful attempts in
succession — fault 050 — fault message F50 is displayed,
i.e. the control unit is interlocked.

It tells you how to unlock it if this happens. There's also some good figures of a disassembled B5WS in there...it looks like theres a strainer at the connection to the glow plug.

Yearly maintenance, normally is nothing more then:

-Cleaning or replacing the fuel atomizer screen.
-Checking and cleaning intake and exhaust.
-Running it on some kerosene or gasoline to burn out any carbon.

Some people like to open them up and replace the gaskets and o-rings, and clean out the combustion chamber by hand.

When the heater fails to fire the first time with an F52's or F54's 95% of the time it will fire if you hit the button a second time.

I will look for the timer instructions to unlock the heater. It seems that it is just on the last page of the timer instruction download at espar.com
