Some of the early 03 had the 47RE in them---i guess just to use up the old stock before the 48RE came out---kinda like my 07 with a 5.9,use them up too until the 6.7 were installed. The reason i jumped on my 07---IMHO the last of the best(no flame or war intended).I thought the 06/07 had different/improved programming for the tranny----something to do with lock-up,might not work with the 03 motors programming.PS sorry had to reread your post ----did not see the 48RE

the 03 has a completely different valve body, the newer trucks have a completely electronic vb, the 03 04 have a tv cable

I dont know, what is interchangeable for sure , but I had a VB built for my 01, by DTT, long story short, it had to be sent back twice because it did not work, they tested it in a 2nd gen and a third gen, to confirm it was indeed a VB failure, their response was if any faults would show up it would be because the 3rd gen runs higher pressures.

I'm sure a tranny shop whould be able to confirm interchangability

Could get a stand alone programmer, for the transmission, but at that point why run a RE48. If you're going to spend the money, I would look into a 5R110 (5 speed ford) and a stand alone. A stock 5R110 is stronger than a slightly modified RE48. If you're going to tow anything, you'll rather have the 5 speed anyways.

You'd have to come up with a bracket for the TV cable, but that's about it.
