I have 62K on my truck now. So I had purchsed the Geno's Egr cleaning kit with the crankcase vent filter http://www.genosgarage.com/Crankcase.../products/159/ and got two gallons of simple green and about 6 cans of the crc. It wasn't too bad of a job just pretty messy. I did the left side of the motor including removing the air horn (a gasket is also supplied) on one day and the rest of the job on another day. The right side of the motor had some tough to get to nuts that got me cursing (but it really doesn't take to much to get me cursing). With over 62K it wasn't really as dirty as I expected it to be. Probably because a lot of my drivng was/is highway. It was just a thin coating and nothing was blocked up at all. Probably took me 8 hrs total (over a two day period). I used air to blow what I could out, then crc non-clorinated brake cleaner,used my power washer (before and after soak) then soaked for about two hours then rinsed and dried it with air. The instructions were very good and took out the guess work.
The "o2 sensor" thing was what the dealers were saying at the beginning instead of removing the intake for a look, even pulling the MAP sensor would tell the story, and having to ADD oil??? it was more like having to remove it as it was making it. I took pictures into the dealer and to my surprise it didn't phase them one bit, they had already seen the problem just weren't admitting it. You are right that some people shouldn't own a diesel that's why a lot of fleet owners are going back to gas, in fact the pipe line company my BIL works for never did switch to diesel, they have only ran gas trucks, I used to think they were crazy but after seeing the problems with the 2010/2012 trucks they are definitely making the right choice. I would have thought that Ram would get it right for the 2013/14's but they are almost as bad and you have to add DEF to boot.
I couldn't imagine using a diesel truck like mine (with all emissions equipment) for a local work, i.e. landscaper. I used my truck for long trips, usually pulling my 5th wheel or commuting mostly highway back and forth from work. Once on vacation I was doing a home project which (of course) required multiple trips to the local Home depot. Within the week I got my only 80% full message. A few minutes on the local highway helped out. But if I was doing a lot of local work I would def. stay with a gas engine. I think that this is the reason my egr and emissions equipment was faily clean.....Because of my driving habits.
