EGR Maintenance

For you guys who are closing in on 60k miles, I just wanted to let you all know that the first EGR valve & EGR cooler cleaning is supposed to be on the manufacturer. There should be a yellow card in your manual as an updated item. This is for when your overhead says "Perform Service". I'm on the 2nd time around for this service which is supposed to be @ 120k miles but again my message didn't come on until 146k miles. The first time it didn't come on until over 60k miles. I paid for this the first time and then just found the supplement card in my manual as I was searching for coolant info. The SW at my dealer was not aware of this "waranted service" either, so this 2nd cleaning will be on the house. Oh, and the first time they didn't clean the cooler - a couple hours of labor, just the EGR valve so I'll be making sure this time it will be done right!!
151k miles on the clock.

I believe the free cleaning is only for owners in certain states where the diesel emission laws are different. In most states the cost is on the owner. I found the following in an online version of the owner's manual...

**The EGR Valve and EGR Cooler maintenance will be
covered by the manufacturer only at this maintenance
interval, for vehicles registered in California, Maine,
Massachusetts, New York and Vermont.

I hope you're right and the service is covered under warranty but not according to the manual.

not of yet but when it gets cleaned for the first time at exactally 36000 miles it will accidentally get misplaced along with the barrel underneath on the exhaust

Don't know about the online version of the manual but as I said, I found a yellow card in my manual, which serves as a supplement to the manual and there were no limitations specified as to location or state. So this time the service is on the house as confirmed by the SW at my dealer and this time they WILL clean the cooler too. It must be a PITA type of job for R & R the cooler which is probably why they didn't do it last time. Plus no one at the dealer has done it yet as I seem to be their high mileage client. They were already experienced with cleaning my EGR valve a few times after I hit 30k miles. My truck was the first they had seen with that problem. That's when I was told to NOT use diesel fuel additives because of the EGR valve gumming up. Then they started coming out with all the flashes. Haven't used any additives since then so don't know if it was the flashes that cured the EGR valve problems or discontinuing the additives.

Forgot, replacing the Closed Crancase Ventilation filter is the third part of that "Perform Service" alert and the filter & labor for that only is on the customer. The yellow card I have pertains to the first "Perform Service" work that needs to be done when you get that alert.

I'll look for a yellow card in my owner's manual. Thanks for the tip.
