Adding factory remote start

Has anyone added factory remote start to their SLT? Not sure how much of a pain this would be or what the dealer would charge. Thanks.

I am curious about this as well. Was way up north all winter and going out to start the truck at minus 15 was getting old. Thought of how nice a remote start would have been. Will be watching to see cost on this add on.

The factory remote start is nice for cooling off the truck or warming it up if you live "where it's warm", but..... it doesn't work if the CEL is on, you can't push the remote start while the engine is running to just "hop out take the key fob and lock the doors", you only get TWO 15 minute runs and that's it, and while it does turn on the heated seats and steering wheel it does NOT engage the exhaust brake, ( I thought it did if it was cold) I think you would be better served by going with a good after market one and you can make it do whatever you want including make coffee.

It is doable, but the dealer will have to program everything since it is replacing your current key or fobik. There is a complete kit available, but it may be more cost effective to go with an aftermarket setup. Saw one on YouTube from AutoSpa installing a setup on a 2011 1500-looked pretty straight forward.

Save some headaches and go aftermarket remote. Oem is a poor choice for this feature. My 12 has factory and I had to add aftermarket to get something that would work for me. Oem has only a 15-20 min run time that can only be reset 2 times before a key has to be inserted. Factory range is very very poor. Like busboy mentioned heaven forbid a cel ever lights up.

That autospa one looks easy. I might give that a whirl first.

I would not bother with the OEM. As stated, the range sucks. I would go with am aftermarket starter and if it is in the budget get one that is compatible with the Directed Smart Start Module. I gives you unlimited range and other functionality that is used with your cell phone. A buddy just got a new '14 1500 and went with the aftermarket and the heated seats and steering wheel still go on with the remote start so you do not lose those benefits.

I got the autospa starter for my father in law for Christmas. Installed on his 2012 ST in seriously, about 8 minutes. Extremely easy, works reliably. We didn't wire the stereo kill, door switch, or lighting wires. Just three clicks of the lock button and it runs for 20 minutes. The install is essentially remove a few screws, lower dash panel pulls off, unplug key cylinder, plug box between wires and key cylinder, put cover back on. The programming was a few button presses and it worked on the first attempt.

Just curious if you try to drive the truck without the key does it stop the engine.

I did. about a year after I bought my truck I looked into adding the factory remote start. I have always had aftermarket remote starts in all of my cars. Right now I have 4 aftermarket starters in my other vehicles.
While it would be easy to install the factory remote starter kit. You would need to have something programmed by the dealer at some point in the middle of the installion. So I spoke with my dealer and they installed it for $450.00. The advantage of the factory remote is that in cold weather it automatically turns on my heated seat, defroster and steering wheel heater. In the warmer weather it automatically turns on the AC and the cooling seats. If you have a base model it might not be worth it compared to an aftermarket. My remote starters (aftermarket)run around 300.00 a pop. In my old truck I got the viper top of the line unit for $450.00 installed.

Autospa starter is similar to factory starter for running without the key. As soon as you press the brake to shift out of park it shuts off. Not sure if the clutch switch on the g56 would do the same. I totally agree with NB64, the higher trim levels would be worth the factory starter for the seat heaters, etc.

Was your father in laws truck a diesel? Does it have a wait to start feature for the grid heater? Their web site leaves a little to be desired with no info at all.

It's a 2012 3500 diesel. Wait to start and all that functions normal, seems that the starter waits for the light to go out. When I ordered it off the website it was the model for a diesel truck.
