For those on the fence
I hope the Smarty Jr disabling my EGR helps the carbon build up! I did the Smarty around 5k miles, so there is that... The fuel dilution from the DPF regen ain't so easy to get around while keeping it easy to get through smog checks.
Not to highjack, but I just picked up a TDI Golf for commuting (45mpg so far!) and with all of the smog and no DEF the oil stays a nice clear golden brown --- WHY?

I changed my oil at 500 miles and checked at 1,020 miles and it is black as coal. Routing the exhaust gas through the intake is just wrong. I will be reading through all the deleting posts as time permits. I
didn't know about EGR systems, so now my education begins and education costs money.

totally different animal on the 6.7 with DPF. an additional injection is done to heat the DPF to burn off particulate soot. i was just wondering because the VW has a DPFas well, but the oil stays clean
after reading this thread i did an oil change and got curious. well what i found is not good. truck is cab & chassis 3500 with 15,000 miles. mixed driving and pulling skid steere. this is what mine looks like.

I think I know which way you are leaning.
