Question for yall....

With all i have read about soot build up.. While doing the deletes is it worth the time and any expense of pulling the head and cleaning it up? Feel free to call me names. I have 32000 ish Miles on my truck.. If its as bad as some of those pics at just 7500 miles.. I'm almost scared to do anything but sell my new girl and beg to buy back my 04... Trust me.. I don't want to do that..

I think that you could best judge that by pulling the intake horn off and taking a look there. Personally, I'd think pulling the head might be overkill, but it would make the perfect oppertunity to change the HG, studs and fix a rare problem before it occurs.

I agree with Stargeezer, pull the intake horn off then decide. You have seen the pics of the two trucks, the 7500miles one was relatively clean especially where the air goes through the grid heater but it was driven very hard and towed heavy from day one. The other at 30,000miles towed reasonably heavy from day one but was idled lots. The 30K truck saw huge mileage and performance differences after deleting. All we did to clean the mess was vacuum first then scrape the gasket and carbon off, re-vacuum then wipe down with a rag and very small amount of brake cleaner on the rag. We did use the H&S intake horn and also their 4 inch boost tube to improve breathing.
If you do pull the horn off have another gasket in hand in case you damage it. One came off ok the other in pieces. The H&S intake comes with a gasket.
As I live close (Terwillegar and Whitemud) and am retired if I can help out or if you want to see how it goes together let me know.

Forgot to add over the summer I may come up with some kind of water/meth or something else injection, installed temporarily to do the cleaning.

Grand Geek,
I've got buyers remorse over my 2010. I had an 06' and although this truck has nicer interior and more room than my other truck, I sure miss the 5.9 with no Government mandated emmision stuff on it.
I also don't get nearly the fuel mileage others are expieriencing on here. I'm getting around 13-14 at best with H&S mini, DPF delete from turbo to muffler and cold air intake.

Dragabusa I'm already getting 17 mpg when its just the truck, mine is a dually.. She gets used hard 1/2 to 3/4's of its milage. I pull a 30 foot gooseneck usually with 7000 lbs up to 16000 lbs on it. I just need it to last 300000 or more kms for it to pay for itself.. For the price we pay for these things they should last that long and much longer.. My 2005 would beat the heck outta me it was so stiff riding. I loved that rig for every other reason but the ride. I will find me a first gen dually 6 speed 4x4 for when this truck wears out. Even if i have to rebuild most of the stuff on the first gen, I'm worried what our next choice of trucks will be... Seems The government wants to mess with a already good thing and make em worse...

At 13 to 14 your getting 5 mpg more then a loaded big rig.. That is so wrong..

I know the old 5.9s got great mileage (it's one of the reasons I bought a Ram) and with the deletes things will get better, but guys, really - 13 to 18 is not bad at all. I know I've said it before, but my old furd 350 w/v10 got as low as 4.5mpg towing and now the worse I've seen has been 12mpg towing. I'll take this any day of the week.

Now that I'm deleted, I hope things are a little better, but thats not why I'm doing it. I'm after a motor that will go the long haul. I expect it to outlast the body - and thats ok. I'm not even looking untill I hit 300k and I love to hit 1,000,000 miles with it.

13 to 18 is brutal after selling my red 04 and being used to 28 on the highway (I mostly travel highway) << That's me hitting myself for selling my red truck ..

Is it just H&S ad Smarty that makes a tuner for these trucks to be deleted? Heck i would be happy with something that makes no additional power.. No other tunes. I love my truck as it is. Just want (require) this EPA junk gone so i can know in the back of my mind she (my truck) will last 300 +kms Of real use.. Not daily driver car use.

Yes H&S and Smarty are the only two that will offer any type of DPF delete tuning, if you did not want additional power you could always select a stock or no power tune.

I wouldn't worry about all the soot inside the head. Ya it gets carboned up, but its a major job to repair it. You could get some chemicals to help dislog the soot. I plan to run water/methanol on mine at some point.

Basically the engine is the same as the 5.9L, just with abit more stroke and bore. The 6.7L deck height is slightly higher than a 5.9L

I rather own a CR 6.7L than CR 5.9L, seen a ton of 5.9L that have piston ring issues/injector issues. Even stock they have issues. Must have rebuilt three CR 5.9L last month, this month I get to build a spare 6.7L engine for myself.
