I notice on the dash of the 2010 trucks I have been looking at there is a warning that says "use low sulphur fuel only" or something like that. Is that something I will have to be aware of as I drive around the US? Are there areas in the US including Alaska that sell (at service stations for motor vehicles) diesel fuel that is not what Dodge/Cummins recommends? And if you used something other than this low sulphur diesel fuel is it just an emissions issue or does something get screwed up in the engine? The dealer said not to worry about it as all fuel available everywhere meets the spec -- I wonder if that was true why they would waste money on the warning label. Ed

 

Starting with the introduction of the 6.7L engine in the model 07.5 and later years trucks, Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), which is 15ppm or less, is required in these engines. The 5.9L engines can run either Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD), which is 500ppm or less) or ULSD.

And yes, you should check the stickers on every pump to be sure you use ULSD in the 6.7L engines. Most all stations now have ULSD, but there are still some that sell LSD, at least here in central Texas. I know this because those stations are where I buy fuel for my 5.9L.

IIRC, (LSD) Low Sulfur Diesel is still legal until mid 2010, after that the only thing you can get is (ULSD) Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. The switch began a while back so you'll be fine, no worries.

 

thanks, what are the consequences of non-intential use of the LSD in the later engines? More DPF regens (or whatever it is called) or actual damage?

 

I believe you'll likely have issues with the DPF and EGR becoming clogged/restricted. That in itself can cause you unnecessary trips to the dealer and the cost of repairs would most probably fall squarely on your shoulders for using an improper fuel.
