2010 Fuel Reqmnt?
2010 Fuel Reqmnt?
I have ordered a 2010 Ram with a Cummins. Dodge claims that the ultra ultra low sulphur (or whatever it is called) must be used in the truck. They also say that everyone (every state, town etc.) will offer the fuel by April and most places already have it. If I happened to be somewhere that only had the previously available low sulphur diesel fuel (sorry I don't know the actual specification) and I had to use it, would it actually hurt the engine? Or is this requirement needed to ensure that the 2010 trucks legally meet the emissions requirements? As expected, my dealer didn't have a clue or did not want to comment. thks, Ed

What you are referring to is ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) which has a sulfur content in the 15 ppm range. The EPA mandated it's use by the middle of 2010 but it's been in stations since 2007. The previous fuel, LSD, (Low Sulfur Diesel) has a sulfur content in the 500 ppm range. As far as damage to your truck running LSD, the DPF wouldn't like it but one tank probably wouldn't cause you any big trouble. Look for the green sticker on the diesel dispenser, it will tell you what fuel you are getting.
thanks for the fuel primer --- I needed that, my first long trip with the cummins (I should get delivery in late April or early May) will be on a 60 day trip driving around Alaska -- so I wasn't sure what fuel I would find in some places thks again, Ed

Don't worry about the fuel up here. It's been ULSD for quite some time now.
