Generator Light came on

I have no idea where to post this. We have a 1997 3500 Dodge Ram 4x4 with 244,000 Km on it. It has been a great truck. We noticed a smell coming from the engine when we drove it today and the generator light came on.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Perhaps the gen is seizing up and burning the belt?

Either the generator is going bad or the idler pulley is shot and the belt is getting so hot it's sliding over the pulleys instead of turning them. I'd check the generator first and if you have it replaced go ahead and do the idler pulley too (if it hasn't been replaced it's overdue).

Place this in the 2nd Gen. Dodge Ram- No Drivetrain forum or the 12 Valve Engine and Drivetrain forums and you will get the visibility you need.
