EGR Unplug
EGR Unplug
Hello,
I have read many threads abouth deletes and EGR removal. Since I would like to keep my warranty (only have 3000 milens on truck) I was thinking of just inplugging the EGR, but I haven't found all the answers. I have a couple of questions:
1. Which plug do I unplug? I know it's on on the intake tube, but whuch one?
2. Will my truck have any negative symptoms other than CEL (like running rough)?
3. Will a code be stored after unplugging which the dealership will then use against me?
I am really getting sick of the regens and with winter around the corner I'm affraid she'll be in regen all the time on #1 fuel.
Any help greatly appreciated.

will set a check engine light and the dealer will find it.
will derate the motor about 40hp
unless you are willing to lie with a check engine light and derated power, then don't do it as just unplugging the EGR will not reduce the number of times it goes into regen as the EGR is only open at idle and just off idle throttle positions.
you say you have 3k miles on it but sick of the regens. does it idle a lot? if so that is the problem. does it do a lot of short trips? that is another problem. do you tow with it at all? hook up to a trailer now and then and run the guts out of it to burn everything off.
I have had mine since feb of this year, have nearly 13k miles on it and only witnessed it in regen 1 time while driving down the freeway as the EVIC mileage (instant mileage) went to around 7mpg while on flat road and cruise control was on. once the regen was completed, mileage went right back up to 17ish

Your EGT's will be lower. On my truck they are about 150-175* cooler than with the EGR plugged in.
On my truck I have noticed that my regens are less frequent. I used to get a regen about once every 150 miles or so and now get one every 250 miles. This is empty mind you. Towing my regens are a lot less frequent as well. I don't know if you idle your truck or not, but if you do/don't an unplugged EGR should help with your mileage a little bit...
I also picked up about 1.5-2.0 mpg hand calculated with the EGR unplugged.
This is just MY experience with the EGR unplugged.

BTW, my oil is up 1 quart from when I took delivery (with 10 miles on odometer).
Have you had the reflash done to your truck yet. There was a recall out for EGR issues and kinda sounds like you need the reflash. Go on Dodge website or dealer see if your recalls have been done. Only answer I could say is delete everything and drive on, but that is eachs own opinion.

something isn't right. mine hardley ever goes into regen. but an unfair advantage is that I am running smarty jr "S" software with everything still in tact (for now) and smarty does disable EGR (even with "S" software.
I stopped at the dealership on the way home. They said that the truck is very new (I just picked it up 3 months ago) so they want to bring it in for an oil change and full diagnosis. I was there for a while and chatted with the mechanic. He checked the oil after about 20 minutes of sitting and said there is too much oil and that is not right. He also said that I regen very frequently, but for a short period of time.
They told me to come in at 4,000 miles for an oil change, so in about two weeks, and he said they'll check it out and fix anything that comes up. In the mean time I should monitor the oil level and if it goes any higher just to bring the truck in.

Pulling my trailer from Farmington, NM to Flagstaff, AZ I got 13.7MPG w/EGR disconnected. I reconnected the EGR in Flagstaff because of the hissing noise from the power steering. The average from Flagstaff to Vegas dropped to 10MPG. I am a believer just disconnecting the 3 or 4 wire plug (can't remember, don't feel like going outside to check) makes a difference. I disconnected the EGR again after the two power steering lines were replaced. I average 17-18MPG highway driving about 80 miles a day. Prior to disconnecting the EGR, my average to/from TX was right around 15-16MPG. Yes, I do get the CEL, but I would put money on it the seat of the pants power DID NOT go down because of it. I raced my brother who has a 2006 4x2 MC 3500 SRW with the 5.9L I smoked him. Neither of us has done any performance mods. I have also passed MANY people up hill with no problems pulling all of our HHGs.
As for regen. I honestly don't know how often it happens on my truck. Most of the time when driving back and forth to work (40 miles one way, 70MPH majority of the time) I have the Fuel Economy gauge displayed and I have never seen it drop like others have described. The only drops I have noticed was .1 - .2 mpg when going up a hill.
As far as I am concerned with my truck, there are no issues other than potentially better MPG. I have had my truck at the dealer a couple times since I had disconnected the EGR (one was for the EGR or HVAC recall--can't remember). I reconnected it the day before going to the dealer to give it enough start-ups to clear the CEL. I have never had a dealer complain (their word against mine) that I had been disconnecting or messing with the EGR system. Besides, I live by the theory that man built it, man programmed it, there WILL be problems and nothing is perfect. I say disconnect the EGR, live with the CEL until you feel comfortable enough to throw a Black Maxx or the like on your truck to disable the EGR and get rid of the CEL. If you think you are running into problems, just reconnect it to see if the problems go away.
