Front end drive issue after 4wd use...

Ok, a month ago I was thinking this was a u-joint issue. But it seems to come after using 4wd and go after being in 2wd for a while. 4wd operates as I would expect. But after coming out of 4wd, I have this rather pronounced hitch in the steering wheel when turning and I can feel it in the front end. It happens on the gas, coasting, in neutral or not. I've inspected the u-joints and they do not have any tel-tale signs of bad wear or sloppiness. The ball joints are in good shape.

Thoughts?

It sounds like your truck is not coming out of 4wd as you would think.
Back to morning brew . . .

So... Transfer case problem? Back in the day you had a big shifter in the floor that you could manhandle. Now it's all electronic.

You need to have the front wheels straight ahead and the drive line not "wound up" when engaging and disengaging 4X4, with a manual xfr case you just force the lever but the electronic ones can't do that. I think what you have is considered normal.

That is my normal operation. I will let of the gas and engage/disengage 4wd. I ended up swinging by my local dealer. The service manager rode with me and suggested u-joints. Said they would need to put it on a lift to properly diagnose. I decided to have them do it Friday. We'll see.

I put mine in neutral (when I can) when I shift in and out of 4WD, and if it doesn't shift right out right away I'll stop and back up- that always does the trick.

Sounds like to me the OP's 4WD shift solenoid is stuck.

Right front u-joint. $500, tax and all. What is a $160 "u-joint kit"??? And that took care of the problem.
