Help With 4wd Front Drive Axle
Im gonna try to keep this as short as I can. I pulled my left wheel off today looking for a brake fluid leak. When I got the wheel off I noticed where something had rubbed a shallow shiny ring on the inside of the rim. Then started looking at getting the caliper off. It was loose! I just pulled it right off! The key and spring that hold it in was gone. Scared the you know what out of me thinking my wife had just drove it. I guess the wheel is all that kept it from falling off. I bought a new caliper and brake pads today and the support key will be in tomorrow. The leak was the block on end of brake hose. I think I have all that going my way but here is my next delimma and I am not sure of the names of everything. While I was cleaning everything I see the (u- joint?) on the left axle needs replacing. I hardly ever use the 4wd but would like to fix it while I have it this far down. Can somebody help me with the procedure for this? Also, I need to identify which drive axle I have. It has a bendix caliper and the rotor measures 327 mm across. Here are the numbers on a metal tag on the cover plate.
52068190 3.54 610357-5
I could really use some pointers changing out that universal.

You have a Dana 60 front axle, a special socket is needed to dissassemble the front hub. It would be best to pick up a manual(Haynes or something) so you can so a diagram of how it goes together.

To do the U joint, I torch them out if they won't press out. There are rings that hold the caps in from the inside so you need to get those out to put the new one in. Like I said, torching the ujoint in half simplifies the process. Reassembly is pretty intuitive.

Mine are the same way, one nut with a pin, special keyed washer with holes in it to catch the pin and then another nut to lock everything together.
Greg, I think the older ones are a little different, I've never seen one like you describe, but it doesn't mean they don't exist. You have selecto locking hubs right? Or do you have the warn style ones.

Yup, my bad. I've got the old-skool selectros They look really cool but are scary-flimsy when you get 'em apart...nuttin but cast aluminum. Guess I know why they switched over to the internal style

One thing to note on those support keys....They do make oversized ones if you need them, and it sounds like you might. That may have been why the key squirted out of there in the first place. I think they have them in +1mm, +2mm, +3mm and +4mm sizes. If you put your caliper on with the new key support and still seems a bit sloppy, you'll probably need an oversized one. Kit should come w/ a new key and spring. Lock screws are separate.

Good point on the keys, I have one that I welded a shim into for that reason. Where is your lock screw? Hopefully its broken off.
To get the u-joints out your going to have to pull the spindle with a spindle puller and the largest slide hammer you can get a hold of. Then you can pull the axle shaft, both inner and outer carefully so you don't tear the inner seal and then you can press, cut, burn or however you have to get the old ones out and install the new ones.
