Does anyone have a part number for "just" a shift solenoid, the dealer wants $2800 and $500 core charge for a rebuild valve body, they say the solenoids are not replaceable by themselves, the solenoids are just clipped in. Apparently the AS68 solenoids are not the same but I'm going to pull one out to compare.

 

I'm no transmission expert, but they look to be easily replaced to me. The above pic was taken by me when I dropped the pan around 60k miles for the sump filter replacement on my '14 RAM 3500 Crew Cab 4x4 w/AS69RC. It's at 132k miles now and has not skipped a beat.

 

That's the thing.. they are easily replaced, but you can't buy "just" the solenoid from the dealer and they want $2800 for a "rebuilt" valve body with all the solenoids and $500 for the core. Thanks for the picture, I'm hoping to get the truck here today and pull the pan. It would be nice if there is a part number on the solenoids and they are obtainable from another source, not holding my breath though. Seems it was a mistake to go with the Aisin compared to the 68rfe. My son took it to a dealer on Monday, the transmission guy said he's done 7 or 8 trucks already so it's a known problem.

 

Sounds extremely pricey to me. BorgWarner makes many solenoids, but probably not for Aisin. Maybe they could give you some leads to the manufacturer??
Last Fall I was at the local dealer and the mechanic asked me to take a look at the Aisin he had just taken out. Input Shaft was broke in half. It was setting on a on a skid with the broken shaft facing me as I walked up. I instantly saw the that the Lube Hole was drilled off center, leaving a much thinner wall on one side of the shaft. He thanked me, then proceeded to tell me it was 2k miles out of warranty. All man made components are vulnerable to failure at some point. Manufacturers bet on making it till warranty is up! After taking the pan off and all the solenoids out to check for resistance and also a short to ground because the dealer was adamant it was a solenoid, all checks ok. we even traced the wires inside the transmission to ensure that they were not shorted. The transmission is throwing P0974 shift solenoid A control circuit high. All 7 solenoids just pop out after removing the 7 retainer pins approx 1/8 inch dia and an inch long from the holes in the valve body close to each solenoid, the hardest part was removing the electrical connector at each solenoid. Did a transmission oil and filter change at the same time, filter was $60. I'm now 99% sure it's the TCM so going to pick one up tomorrow. Bully Dog assures me that it is impossible for their tuner to interact with the TCM but strange how this happened right after installing the BD.

 

How many miles on the 2013??? How often has the transmission been serviced??? Did you go back with ASRC fluid or Mobil 3309 ATF???

I'd toss the Bully Dog if the problem happened immediately thereafter.

 

It's just at 100k miles and trans was serviced at 60k and just now, it was spotless inside, I dropped the oil through a 2 micron filter paper. Using Amsoil 100% synthetic. It was about 6 weeks after the Bully Dog was installed that this happened.

 

It was a broken wire outside the transmission and all is well again.

 

Did it appear to be just a fluke failure, or had the wire gotten damaged in some way???

The wire had gotten damaged probably from gravel being thrown up, the wires are so small and not very well protected at all, I guess it would be ok if the truck only drives on paved roads but I couldn't believe how many areas of the harness were damaged especially the area in the drives wheel well. I'm going to look for some thin reinforced rubber to wrap the exposed areas of the harness. The transmission is working fine now but the clutch fan bearing is almost done so more expense.

Yep. That's what happened to me. I'm the one gsbrokman linked to in the above post. It's outrageous that the dealer wants $2,800. just for parts and it's not the problem. Look at the linked post for pictures.
