Where's the juice going?

Shortly after starting, I’ll turn on headlights and heater like usual. After a few seconds, my headlights dim down to probably 40% of normal and my heater blower RPM’s kick way down too. This condition lasts about 5-15 seconds and then everything restores back to normal. This may happen 3-5 times until everything gets warm, and then I don’t notice it any more.

Anyone know what electrical event is happening to cause such a hard pull down? Its got to be related to the cold I think, as I never noticed this during summer driving. Thing is, its not even that cold yet (32 degrees F).

Thanks...

Intake grid heater. Normal operation for the first 150 seconds or until you get to 18 mph.

What Camper said...Mine starts doing it around 45-50 degrees IIRC? I know it's been doing it the past week and we've barely broken downward of 50 degrees.

Thank you gents....

Thanks for the replies.

Thing is, I thought that after the first combustion or two the grids weren't necessary. Hmmm, takes longer to warm up maybe....

let your truck idle for the 2 minutes and then take off slowly. The heater is not gonna work for a good 10 minutes because the engine has 7 gallons of 50/50 premix thats alot to get warm before you have heat. Take it easy

I don't know if the exhaust brake maybe has something to do with this on the 6.7's, but I get heat alot faster than 10 minutes! Maybe half that even...

Normal for cold weather. I can't remember exactly where, but somewhere in the owners manual this is mentioned. Gotta admit, before I read it, I thought I was having alternator problems.

Yep... turning on the exhaust brake function while idling works the turbo. You can hear it whistlin' after you hit the button if you listen for it. It's actually mentioned in the manual and definitely does cut the cab warm up time quite drastically.
