Wheels/tires

My truck came with the 17x8 chrome/steel wheels. Are they that much heavier than the alloy wheel and costing me mileage with all the stop and go. In the future I am considering going to a larger tire than the stock 265/70 but don't want gas mileage to suffer too much. I have the 3.73 gears. What is the size of my tires in inches? 31? Should I ditch the tires and the wheels when I make the switch? Any ideas?

Re:Wheels/tires

The delta in fuel mileage due to weight savings from changing to alum wheels would be nil. But if you find something that you think looks better, and the wallet can support it, buy them.

Driving habits have a much more profound effect on mpg figures.

For tire specs, go take a look at www.tirerack.com. You can find all kinds of good info on most tires that fit on our trucks. A BFG 265/70-17C has a dia of 31.8" with 654 rev's per mile.

Re:Wheels/tires

Thank you for the replys. I'll check out that link. Now that I think of it, I think I remember someone saying we can't go to a smaller dia. rim size either because of the brake rotors being very large. Please correct me if this is not true. Thanks.

Randy.

Re:Wheels/tires

Ram04,

Yeah, we can't go with smaller wheels because the brakes are so big. But the stock 8" wide wheels will support at least a 285 70 tire. If you are interested in wheels check out the Mickey Thompsom forged wheels. They can be had in a nine inch wide too. That's what I'm going to get once I decide on the tire brand.

Re:Wheels/tires

Wetspirit,

Wider would be cool. I am just undecided how tall I want to go. I would like to see some pics and feedback before I decide on anything. Lifts, wheel offsets, 4x4 in general is pretty much unchartered territory for me, so I need to inform myself as much as possible so I dont end up taking a sawzall to my truck so the tires don't rub like someguys I see around my area. Thanks.

ps. Whats the best price you have found on those Mickey thompsons?

Re:Wheels/tires

Ram04,

I haven't looked into prices yet but went to the M/T website and also someone else has them on and posted some pix. Sorry I can't remember who that was. Maybe someone else will remember.
I love the notion of a sawzall to the wheel wells
An old friend of mine "fixed" the rubbing with a hacksaw and vicegrips once. Made big flapping flares around the rear wheels. On a Cougar no less! Yeaoww.

Re:Wheels/tires

I may have missed something...did they change the width of the "chrome" rim. I have them on my rig and they are 17x7.5 not 8....????

TIA

Re:Wheels/tires

my chrome wheels say 17x8 in the literature but I haven't measured them either. Anybody have any good pics of wheel tire combos for the 3rd gen, I would like to see them. Thanks.

Re:Wheels/tires

The aluminum wheels will have the size cast into them on the inside. Don't know if the steels are marked inside. Here is a good link for tire sizes. Easy to use and lets you compare sizes and see the difference.

I was able to get 315/75 R16s (35s) under mine after a 5" suspension lift no problemo.....I think you can do this with only a 2" leveling kit but am not sure.......

Hey your truck looks great tanderson. Pretty sure I wouldn't be able to see in to my toolbox with the 5" lift and the 35's though. But I guess I could learn to improvise.

Randy.
