Don't know if Shell has made changes or not but talking to my cousin the other day and he told me he has quit using Rotella. He felt it was not that good of an oil any more so he has stopped using it in his engines.

What has changed?

Only difference I know of is the new CJ-4 compliance...

The "other" site the original poster is more than likely referring to is LITTERED with crap from their Amsoil rep. That's all you hear about over there, probably one of the reasons he's not here anymore.

I swear I'm not being smart here, but is your cousin a chemist? Work in a oil analysis lab?
All to often people get worked up about what billybob said the other day, more times than not it has nothing to do with the quality of the product.

Unless someone has some laboratory analysis of an oil, tested against OTHER oils under the same conditions and then compared with each other, their opinions don't mean diddly.

I should make clear that although I use Amsoil and it is my choice- I do feel that Rotella is one of the top Dino oils. Very popular worldwide. Probably the MOST popular. Heck, when I was overseas I saw it advertised in many places and used in some that I don't wish to go back to!

Ok guys, we all remember how Oil and Transmissions cause problems on these forums even more so that Religion and Politics.

Lets PLEASE be respectful of each others opinions here, I don't want to have to step in to what should be a good thread.

Consider this a warning!

Your correct you don’t know my cousin, but I do, so I listen to him being his farm equipment cost a lot of $$$. FYI his combine head cost 3 times more then the retail price of most pickup trucks.

That sounds great and all, and im sure he does know what hes talking about.
But what facts or evidence arrived him at the conclusion to not use it anymore? It would be helpful to all of us that use that oil and would like just a few reasons why versus just hearing that your cousin said not to use it.
Im just wondering what they would have changed when they went to the new CJ-4 compliance...

Here's an interesting ARTICLE discussing the challenges faced in lubricating a diesel engine with EGR. The article doesn't even discuss the reduced sulfated ash requirements of lube oils to meet the Tier 3 particulate requirements with particulate traps.

Does he use motor oil in the head? I'm not doubting his knowledge, and would never suggest that you shouldn't value his opinion, just wondering what he is basing his conclusion on.
I would be more comfortable with someone coming out and saying "I decided stop using brand "A" because it has just gotten too expensive". At least that I can understand and identify with, just saying "I don't like it anymore" is not a valid reason for most folks.

I quit using Amsoil because of the increase in price. I use Rotella T as well as several of my friends. They have several CTD and have used T for well over 1million miles all total without an engine oil related problem.
