Rattling Brake Calipers
Rattling Brake Calipers
I have an '05 2500, quad cab, long bed, all is stock, nearing 150,000.
It's hard to describe the rattling noise I have in the front end, but I believe I have narrowed this to the front brake calipers. The mounting bolts are tight and the pads are new, but I can grab the caliper and there is "play" from side to side, at least until the pad contacts the rotor.
Also tie rod ends replaced couple months back.
Looking for some insight on this condition.

I see you have replaced the pads. If so lots of replacement pads come with noise shims. Some snap onto the pads. Sometimes the shims come loose and make a nasty rattle. Neighbor had his Jeep's done not long ago and when I looked into it that was the issue. You would hear it mostly on bumps. Take the pads down and put some anti sieze on the back of the pads. Do it lightly as A/S will get everywhere quick and make a big mess. Should stop the rattle though. Just need something to keep those plates snug. The caliper backs off slightly when you let off the brake pedal. That's normal. It should move some. HTH

TX... Also there is some anti rattle silicone that can be purchased for the back of the pads to adhere them to the pistons. Not an "Oh my god" bond just enough to keep the pads from making noise. Helps the squeal as well... Autozone, Advanced, or Napa should be able to hook you up.
Mr Bee if you mena that blue gooey stuff, it doesn't hold up well under heat. The neighbor's mechanic used that stuff originally he said. Anti seize will be around after a nuclear explosion. Cockroaches will be eating it.

I have not replaced pads, and mine are doing the same thing. Going down the street slow and if you hit a bump there is a rattle, but the minute you apply the brakes it stops. I have grabbed my calipers and they have a little play, but like you said the bolts are tight. There was a post a few months ago about this and the response was to shim the pads.
Anything new on this? My new brake pads are rattling like hell on slow speed bumps. Apply the brakes and all noise stops. Can new anti-rattle clips be installed without taking the calipers apart? I think that the anti-seize applied by the shop has burnt away. The pads are semi-mettalic and otherwise work great with tons of stopping power.

Check the thin metal clips (anti-rattle?). I found that those clips were actually making more noise than they were stopping. After I pounded the ends in to tighten them on the caliper (they easily slid side-to-side by hand), the rattling noise was gone.

Well, I replaced the anti-rattle clips, located on either end of the pads and viola, so far, no more rattling. It was unexpected, but I guess these can wear out! Kit comes with 4 clips and 4 boots that surround the bolts (2 each per wheel); cost about $12.
