Is it possible to buy a new truck FROM Mexico??
Is it possible to buy a new truck FROM Mexico??
I can't even find a dodge dealer listed in Mexico at all. Do they only build them there or is it possible to buy one there. A friend wants a new 3500 with 6.7 SO BAD he wants to go there to get one. possible??? thanx , DAVE
I am not sure if it is possible but it may depend on where he lifes if he wants one. I have heard that the truck in Mexico don't have all of the pollution stuff on them. So, if he live in a state that has smog testing I wouldn't do it. But you knok that if there is a will there is a way, especially with $$. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Vehicles that enter the state have to go through a rigorous test to make sure it conforms to US specs. On the other side of the coin, a truck that was built outside of this country with US specs cannot be purchased outside US, even if it was made in that country (i.e. you cannot purchase a US Spec truck (built in Mexico) at a Mexican dealer.
Let's say you go ahead and purchase a "Mexican RAMo" and do all the modifications for pollution, fuel consumption, crash safety rating specs, lighting specs, etc. If it passes all the US tests, then you have the HUGE tariff to deal with; By then, you would've spent more than buying a US Spec truck.
To do the reverse procedure has less red tape, but more costly. Any US Spec vehicle that enters mexico for permanent use does not have to conform to any of the above tests but the tariff is a whopping 50% of the current NADA value of the vehicle, unless it's more than 10 years old, then the tariff drops to 10%.
These laws are setup by the big automakers' lobbysts, (definition, lobbysts: polititians on the automaker's payrolls) to keep people like you and I from saving a couple of dollars when buying their product and to eliminate the possibility of all others starting an import/export business to compete with them.
Hope this helps.
Cars/Trucks go back and forth between Canada and U.S. everyday. Mexico is part of North American Free Trade Agreement. No duty or tarriffs. Trucks for Mexican market are stamped Not for use in US and Canada and you would have a hard time insuring them and registering them. Our trucks in Mexico are probably 1/2 the price or less. I've seen ram 4500's in ElPaso before with Mexican plates on them. Mexico has way cooler vehicles. They had a full size ram "suburban that was too cool" The dodge 4500 to 6500's are sweet. ks
i have family in mississippi that are cotton farmers and i remember they had a few chevy 1500 2 wheel drive short bed regular cabs that had the diesel in it. i said i never new chevy did that and he told me they bought them outta mexico. this was about 10 years ago but it was neat to see and they had some nutz to them too.

interesting topic for sure.
as a marine stationed on okinawa many times a service man or woman could buy a vehicle through the base px/bx at a reduced rate. as i recall the prices were at or below dealer cost. i never really researched it as i never needed to buy a new vehicle while stationed overseas.
the process was this, one would order the truck/car/harley-davidson that he wanted. the vehicle is ordered to the options wanted and would be picked up at a dealership on the west coast or home state. only draw back then was that when the serviceman registered the truck etc. he would have to pay the sales tax.
as i recall one could get some fantistic deals below dealer prices.
now all you have to do is enlist, get a tour in any foreign country and order your truck.
don't see this happening in most cases but interesting information none the less.

You are correct in your statement. The vehicle you buy is built to american standards so it can be used in the states. On some occasions they use the vehicles while serving their duty overseas then have them shipped home as if it were bought in the US. I have met and talked with servicemen while deployed overseas to (Japan) Yokuska, Sasebo & Okinawa that own Toyota Supras, Mazda RX-7's, EVO's and Nissan Skyline GT-R's with all the performance goodies the rice crowd could imagine but, once their tour of duty is up they will have to leave the car there or have a company out of SoCal called Motorex bring it over and convert it for 10-15k to meet US safety standards. Not really worth it in my opinion.
