PacBrake Issues

First off, I want everyone who reads this thread to know that I absolutely love the PacBrake system. I have 86k on my truck and still the original brake pads!! This is the BEST investment I have made on my pile in four years of ownership.

However, it hasn't all been sweet. After a year, a solenoid went bad and was replaced under warranty. Than last year, the compressor blew so I bought a new one from PacBrake and got the air tank and new pressure switch back in December. I hooked up a set of Grover air horns to the system and it works great. This morning I drive to work and everything is fine. Drive home from work and now the brake doesn't work. The brake itself was making the engaging sound (loud click) but nothing was happening. Checked under the hood for loose wires but found none. Now I have nothing, no brake or horns. Shop that installed can't take me until Tuesday, so I would like to try and fix it myself. Any thoughts on where to look will be much appreciated. I am so used to the brake and now that its not there really sucks. Thanks again for any help.

check and see that the air cylinder is still attached on the valve .. also have you been adding oil in the air cyl. every now and then? might have lost a seal in the cyl. is the comp ,pumping air? check and see you have no hole in the air lines
let me know I have installed a lot of ex brakes pac/ is my fav.

do you hear the compressor running ? check the fuse, after that look and make sure the line did not blow off the tank, or at the valve in the cab that we put in. anything past the valve will not have any effect on the system. there is a slim hairs chance that the ball valve could go, but a real slim hair of a chance, hardly worth mentioning. If that compressor is not running, we gotta look into how it is set up, with a relay or what, and then shoot at the links electrically.

Compressor is not running, and I checked all the lines and they all seem to be hooked up. I am not sure where the fuse is, will have to look at it again when I get home.

I will start by saying that I do not have a Pacbrake, have never worked on one.

That being said, if the compressor never runs, it has to be something electrical. Somebody isn't getting the signal that there is a need for air it seems like. Have you looked over the wiring at all? Tried "jumping" the compressor, bypassing previous wiring to ensure that when power is supplied it runs?

If your interfaced with the ECM remove the ground wire coming out of the ECM to the exhaust brake compressor, ground the compressor side of this wire to the battery, if the compressor starts pumping the ECM has stopped putting out it’s signal, If the compressor don’t pump at all and the 30 amp fuse is ok call me 1-800-663-0096 ext 228.

Guys, thanks for all your responses. I changed the fuse today (was blown) and another fuse under the hood by my Isolation module for the plow was literally split in half, so now the compressor is working and my horn and the brake are good. What would make the fuse blow like that? Last time my truck was blowing fuses, the compressor was bad. Any thoughts?

There was a fuse update that took it from 20 amp to a 30 amp. When I bought mine I was blowing fuses like crazy. I jumped on the Pac web site and saw the update. I switched to a 30 amp and never have had any problems since. Hopefully you changed to a 30 amp fuse. If that's not your problem then maybe the relay and or pressure switch is going bad? I don't know.

I had my toggle switch go bad. Took it out connected the 2 wires together and sure enough the Packbrake worked fine, so I just replaced it with one from Auto Zone, and back in business again.

Yep I called Harold and he told me about the 30 amp fuse thing, so I replaced my burnt 20 with a 30 and it seems to be working perfectly. Thanks again for your help.
