Mudflaps

A thread on one of the forums recently was talking about duallys needing clearnace lights due to the width (over 80 inches).

It also stated that it was required by law for all duallys to have mudflaps.

In the Dodge pictures website/brochure it doesn't look like they have mudflaps on them. The question is do they come with mudflaps installed or does DC sell illegal vehicles?

06 Laramie 3500 on order.

Thanks

They don't come with them. Where is it illegal?

In Texas when the truck is used 'commercial' it is required to have mudflaps because there are more that 2 tires on the rear.

This only applies for Commercial usage. So a truck off the lot does not require them. But if you bought a C/C they would be there by default.

A guy on another forum (from TX) was saying that they were required. He failed to mention that it was for commercial trucks. In fact he stated that he had lost one and was pulled over by a trooper. He didn't indicate that he was driving a commercial truck.

I sent US DOT an email and they responded that there are NO Federal requirements for mudflaps as the guy from TX stated.

I purchased my truck from Dave Smith Motors in Idaho and I had to sign a waiver for not wanting mud flaps on the rear, my sales rep. said it was Id. law all dual wheel Vehicles have to have them.

My dually came with mud flaps. They were probably put on by the dealer, because they had their logo on them. I took them off & made my own from cut down 18 wheeler flaps with chrome mud flap weights & a chrome eagle in the middle.

Here is the Texas requirement

What gets inspected
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/insp...classsubmit=Go

Have to read this one:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/insp...ejectsubmit=Go

This second one is written that all trucks >80" "commercial or not" require it.
Go back and select pick-ups UNDER <80" And they are required there too!

So I stand corrected, the law is written that no matter what width if you are more than 2 wheels at the rearmost part then flaps are required. In Texas!

Thanks for the info.

Just out of curiosity, if I'm driving a Colo. licensed truck where flaps aren't required and I go into TX will I be ticketed, warned, or the vehicle impounded?

I plan to put them on the new truck, just wondering what would happen.

I would hope that your out of state status would exempt you or grace you from something that picky. In all my years I wouldn't write anyone from out of state (for anything) unless you had an attitude.

I see dually's everyday without flaps and as said before, I thought it was commercial only. So they would really have to be a butt to mess with you - out of state and not having mudflaps. But I'm sure many of us have experienced such nitpicking before.
