Talking Looks like I might get a free Cummins

It will take a couple of years, but if today's fuel trend continues I'm in pretty good shape.

Let's look at the numbers:

My friend's 2003 2500 w/Hemi was $4,376 less than my 2003 2500 w/Cummins. Trucks are almost alike with a few option differences, but both are 4wd SLTs

Diesel in D/FW today $1.65. Midgrade (that Hemi needs extra octane) $1.95.

My lifetime mileage average covering 30,000 miles - 16.875 mpg
My friend's average - 12 mpg (I think it's less but we'll give him 12)

My fuel cost per mile today - $.0971
My friend's cost per mile today - $.1625
Difference in fuel cost with Cummins - $(.0654)

I need 66,870 miles at this difference to pay for the engine upgrade.

Look's like I made a good choice.

Gotta go. I better get to driving if I'm going to get that engine paid for in the next two years.

That thing got a Hemi?....too bad

With fuel prices the way they are right now I keep thinking I made the right choice too. I filled up this morning for $1.59/gallon. It's been the same price for the past four weeks. Regular unleaded at the same pump was $1.79/gallon.

Last night diesel was 66.9 cents per liter here.
Gas was 92.9 for mid grade! Thats about 1.20 a gallon more!
Gas is supposed to jump to one dollar per liter today!

Glad I always had a diesel.

Just paid $1.65/gallon yesterday for Diesel here in MD. Regular unleaded is almost pushing the $2 range.

$2.19 for sludge on Sunday, 4 days ago, drove by the fuel store today and diesel's up to $2.30 . Mother F*($)_)er's, that pisses me off. Ooops, did I just curse in crypt?

Of course gas is still north of that number, so I still can have the last laugh.

Those of us "lucky" enough to be in California have been paying more than premium gas for a while. This is a history of what I paid for the last couple months at the same station in Long Beach.

3/10 - $1.72
3/20 - $1.80
3/27 - $1.92
4/02 - $2.10
4/09 - $2.16
4/18 - $2.28
4/26 - $2.28
5/05 - $2.40

$1.77 for a US gal (calculating exchange and the difference in the CDN vs US Gal) in central Canada.

But the payback equation gets even better for those who leased their trucks. The 4% higher residual for the diesel (vs the hemi), plus the ability to beat the residual when it comes time to turn the truck in (i.e. buy it out and sell it for more than the buyout nymber to recoup some of your lease payments), further reduces the cost of ownership. Plus there is no Hemi around that will pull like the Cummins (in my opinion). I'm happy and definately made the right purchase choice.

cool. so 4000 miles more and my Cummins is paid for.
well to you it would be...
unleaded here is running $1.779 and diesel is $1.579.

I about crapped last week when we went to PA, diesel at the PA WV state line was $1.899. and for the first time in my liftetime I saw reg unleaded for over $2.00

It's really hard to believe that less than 5 years ago there was a price war on unleaded near our house and you could get a gallon of reg for .579!!!!!
yes that's less than 58 cents per gallon!

I'm also happy with my choice of the CTD. What I don't understand is the price differences in different parts of the country. State taxes would account for some of the difference, but a dollar or more per gal.
Filled up today with diesel at 1.5999. Premium unleaded at 1.999.
40 cents a gal difference. Two months ago the difference was only 20 cents with diesel at 1.499 and prem gas at 1.699. Here, diesel has doubled the amount that it is cheaper than gasoline.
Obviously, I'm not smart enough to pick up the pattern at work with petro pricing.
Ed
