Jumping ship question
Jumping ship question
hello 3rd Gen.
My name is Justin and I'm a stubborn VP guy.
I would love to keep my 2nd gen with all that I have done plus my engine only has 26k on rebuild. But kiddo is getting bigger and need a bigger back seat. I'm not so sold on the 6.7 and dealing with deletes. So I have a few trucks that Im looking at 05 and 06 not sure what HP ratings they are. they are both around 50-60k miles. not sure what type of history they have or even if i can tell if a chip was ever installed. Ive only looked at them over the website and soon will in person.
does the ingnition key cycle trick work on these years for codes?
what is the biggest diff in the 2 years if any??
also I live so close to my work that I often drive more to warm up my truck. I know this would be a issue with the 6.7 and that type of use without deletes. but with a CR of these years is this a issue. (CR injector life)??
100k ?
plans would be address the fuel system (fass, air dog) etc. steering.
Air intake / Turbo not sure what size yet. and tranny. clutch or auto upgrade pending the truck I buy. my goal would be just 500-550 HP with best MPG possible. Towing very little.
Thanks for the help. I did do some site searching but alot of the threads were alot older of answers. I would like to know what is thought of current.

Oh no, not one of those VP guys.
Welcome!
Yes, it does. You hold down the odo trip button while cycling the key three times. Then let off the button and codes will cycle on the readout.
As far as I can tell on the outside, the headlight shape and front bumper. I believe there is some differences in the ECM as well. The 06-07 have a difference brain that then 03-04.5-05 trucks. Oh, doublecheck the sequence of the tow/Haul modes. I don't know what year it ended/started, but the older trucks the T/H mode was nothing more than OD off. The 06 T/H has a better sequence in that it allows OD when up to speed (~50-55mph). For the HP reading, look on the sticker on the side of the head. It should say what rating the engine is. The 06 should be 325/610. Not certain of the 05.
Don't think so. Use an additive to help lube the injectors. I use Lucas. Otherwise you'll likely notice the MPG more than anything not getting the truck fully warm for short trips. I use the truck similar to you with short trips as the daily driver. I'm not worried about the injectors. I keep tabs on them to a degree by dong the oil analysis and checking the amount of fuel in oil. There is none. I recommend you do get additional filters on the fuel system from the get go. I use a GDP 2micron kit between the stock can and CP3. Keep the fuel clean as I'm sure you know that. That'll benefit the injectors.
As far as the emissions equipment, the 06 has a cat before the muffler. I don't think the 05 does but I could be wrong on that. The 06 does have a 4" stock exhaust. I think the 05 was a 3.5" but don't quote me on that. I don't have any issues with the system clogging and shutting the truck down. I don't know if it is possible like it is on the 6.7s. One thing I can feel is the truck being a little sluggish now and then if I haven't run it on the highway and really gotten it hot or blown out the crud. It's almost like blowing your nose, you gotta do it sometimes and AhHH you feel better
That can be done anytime by stepping on it from a stop. So, no worry really.
There are good products out for the upgrades you want. So you can get specific after you pick out a truck. For a 48RE upgrade, I've always figured if I ever had the chance I'd use Goerend or Garmon. For a programmer, I'd get gucci and get EFILive. Head's up, I don't know if EFILive is out for the -05 trucks yet. But it is for the 06-07. So if that was going to be your course, keep that in mind.
When I was first shopping around I had to make the choice like you about the year models. I have no regrets with my '06. I know there a lot of guys loyal to their 03-05 trucks too. Pick what your gut tells you is right

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to do my best as the trucks are 2 hours away from me and with my current graveyard shift at the hospital. I will go check them out soon. if I pick the Auto or find on with a auto I will likely talk to Rip at sourceautomotive in Portland as far as tranny upgrade. they have done alot of good with me in the past.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Well I went the opposite direction but here goes:
IF I recall correctly a significant difference between the 05 and 06 is the "in cylinder EGR" cam'ing to create an EGR of sorts, not a huge deal don't shy away from it to much, one of the only ill effects I noticed was EGT's could get wild at stock power levels
CR injectors are known for failure but they are not as bad as the rap they get, a good filtration system and semi regular use of an additive kept mine intact for about 100K.
I have always heard bad things about the 68re trans they do have slushy converters, like to erratically shift but with regular maintenance of fluids and bands held together much longer then I thought it would sold the truck with no tranny work needed.

bringing this back.
so I'm still looking I have found a 07 5.9 mega cab 4x4 slt with bucket seats that have the separation work thing between the front seats. its the electric blue color or whatever its called. custom black wheels. new 35" tires. black mbrp 4 exhaust. 53k miles. Auto. it has only bumper pulled very little. I see no evidence of aftermarket adders. or gauges. I need to look up how i can pull the hours on it so i can find out if there has been a lot more idle time etc. very clean. the only ugly thing that could be fixed with covers is the seats are the upgraded fabric but they are khaki. who puts that color in a blue truck..... the party is asking 39k$ due to age alone i would feel better paying 32-34. but I am also waiting on my 2nd gen to sell. so many tire kickers or 18 year old kids that no nothing about a diesel.. I'm not going to sell my 2nd gen to someone that is going to just destroy it.

I just bought an 05. I think its got the best looking body style. 4 doors and all kinds of cab room. If I had it to do over again I would have held out for a manual. Goerends doesnt sell transmissions anymore. They sell parts to tranny shops, so getting a good tranny is going to be a crap shoot where as before if you got a Goerends you got a good tranny and good support. Those days are over. The tow haul on my truck locks up in 2,3 and overdrive, it does not turn the overdrive off. With the button off it just locks up in overdrive only. I've read that there is a product from BD that will let you turn the overdrive off.
