Jake brake pump history 50,000KM
The vacuum pump for my dealer installed Jake brake packed it in at about 30,000 miles, less than 2 years old. It was replaced under warranty. It's a $1200.00 item. What bothers me is that the mechanic told me that my experience was typical. Hell, if I have to replace this thing myself in another 30,000 miles I am not gonna be happy. Has anyone else had one break down and at what mileage?
Also on my 96 I had a BD brake and the vacuum pump would not produce enough vacuum to run the brake booster and the BD, so I put a vacuum tank on the truck. That solved the booster prob and also made sure the exhaust brake had lots of vacuum. I'm told that I can't do that on my 07 because there is no vacuum pump on it to run things like heater controls and cruise etc. Is that true????

PACBRAKE!!!!! LOL Just personal preference. ANd some will come on here and say your warranty is Void or you will have factory warranty issues. Not so, they will pay for the repair if it causes damage and also SOme Dodge DEALERS install the pacbrakes!

I had the same problem as you, except mine lasted for about 60,000 km. I ended up getting a replacement covered under waranty. Just an FYI, Cummins (Western Canada) wants about $230 out the door.
Yes this is true. The Jacobs brake uses the not so reliable vacuum pump while Pac and BD brakes use an air compressor.

I put a Jake brake on my 03, which I sold to a friend of mine and the original pump is working fine.
I now have an 06 that I bought used with like 38k on it, and the previous owner said the only problem it has had other than routine service is the vacuum pump croaked and was replaced under warranty.
There's a thread over on TDR about a guy who's gone through 3 pumps in 120,000...
Anyway, I believe the Cummins part number is 3965925. Looking around on line, it looks like they are under $200.

I have seen many threads on the pump failures on the Jacobs Exhaust brake, but the price has come down on these. I think last check was around $150 or so for the pump from a Cummins shop...

Some glad I started this thread.....now I know there is a much better alternative to getting one of these pumps from a dealer.
How do they get away with it?

Most parts seem to be cheaper at a Cummins parts house.
I wonder who builds the pump?
It looks as though it was intended to be rebuildable... if a person could find a place to get a rebuild kit...
