Folks
I have a 2005 with the 8 foot bed, 4 door, Cummins. When I changed the oil and rotated tires yesterday, I took some time and considered the tank mod. On the rear of the tank, on the top where the new vent would be installed, there is a vent or something that looks like one already there. Comes up out of the tank about an inch, then turns straight out for about 2 inches. Anyone know what this is for?
Thanks
Charlie

Sisk, I'm willing to bet what your are seeing is the highly debated EVAP vent for gas engines. It seems that DC used the same tanks they use for gassers on diesels. I have two, one up front, and one in the rear. The debate was that if those vents are not closed, they might allow contaminates into our tanks (ie water). Several of us plugged them, including me, just for safe measures. There were reports of several people having water in their tanks, and upon further analysis, it was determined that water entered those vents. So that is why some of us took the approach of closing them off. I have a short bed so I do not know exactly where your vent is, but I bet that is what you are seeing. There are reports from 05 owners that a tube was placed on those vents to eliminate the potential problem. That's my story...

I'm obviously in the minority on this thread but I pull up to the pump, which there are on just about every corner here in the DFW area, and put the nozzle on high and let it run until it clicks off. I remove the nozzle after the first click, take my receipt and go! I don't see the benefit of an extra 4 or 5 gallons considering all the work/hassle of installing a mod on a fuel tank that PROBABLY is designed to have a cavity for fuel expansion and foaming. I also don't see the benefit of sitting at the pump for 20 minutes fighting with the foam just to squeeze in a little more diesel. For those of you who live in a city and are doing this mod, what am I missing? Flame on.......

You could get those extra 5 gallons in the tank in the same time it takes you to fill to click off. Lets say 5 gallons at 18 MPG would give you an extra 90 miles of driving. Now lets play with some numbers. If you averaged 20000 miles per year and got 18 MPG you would have to fill up your tank approx 37 times filling to click off. If you were able to get an extra 5 gallons in the tank each time, you would only be filling up about 31 times per year. 6 extra stops at 10 or 15 minutes each works out to a little over 1 hour per year. That dosent sound like much now that I think about it. , especially since it will take you 2 years to get your time back after you figure in the installation.

Actually, I like the extra range, and it gave me something to do for a few hours.

With prices going up almost every day, it lets me save a buck a week. The beauty of it is when you hit the open road. Another 120 - 150 miles out of the tank. Or, in the DFW area, it extends my stay on the road for 3 more days. If there were a real benefit, you know your milage calculation is more accurate. Same line each time.
