For those of you who might be a bit afraid to mess with a fuel tank, you should understand that diesel fuel is nowhere NEAR as flammable as gasoline. Now, you shouldn't be sitting under the tank with a propane torch going of course, but using basic common sense is enough to ensure you don't start a fire with diesel. An ordinary spark will not set it off. For all practical purposes, diesel can be likened to kerosene when it comes to flammability. It's just not that bad.

Cautinary note: that depends on the quality and how much the climatizing has affected the vapor point and thus flash point.

thanks for the tip!

also if anyone in the NW PA area wants to do this mod i'd volunteer my garage and tools as well.

Thumbs up Vent Kit

I've had my kit for over a month now just havn't had the time to install. As others have stated David's directions is step by step, sure enough a easy mod.

Yeah, my dumb a@@ didn't look close enough at his picture to where to put the new hole. I went back a bit and luckily, I have the nut in the tank and not the other way (too high) when I raised it up. My genius cut was right where the the bed cross member is. I guess I'll be ok. It just butt up against it. I know for sure that it aint going to move. I'll monitor it and see if any diesel does come through. Heck, just to keep a free and clear head about it, I might by a new tank and do it over. I guess I'm not the only one that had this problem. In his new directions he states to make sure to chalk where the bed cross member is and not only that he doesn't recommend the nut in the tank (someone said it came un done). He put the new instruction out today 2/20.

i disagree with you there. i installed my kit tonight. the mod doesn't require a great deal of technical skill but it does require patience! i cannot repeat the words i yelled trying to get those fuel lines off. i'd rate this one a 3 out of 5 on the difficulty scale because of what is involved with dropping the tank. the connections on the sending unit and the front tank mount nut are a real adventure. took me about 3 hours, but i emptied my tank and cleaned it with rags and a shop vac... long story

that said, david's kit is excellent and will soon pay for itself. i filled up with 40 gallons in 5 minutes. best mod in the history of this truck.

Yeah, the patience. I know they call those two clamps quick-connects, but they for sure are not quick disconnects. The one on the right was fairly easy, the one on the left gave me fits. Other than that, it was fairly simple. I didn't have a lift or anything to raise the tank back up. So what I did was use two tie-downs with the ratchet drive and hoisted it up that way. MUCH more user friendly. We have thunderstorms today, so I guess I'll find out if the vent unit is sealed from water . But dang, you talk about filling up. I mean I was bone dry and 5 minutes I was filled to the neck and gone! It's the little things, yah know.

Just did my DKelley tank mod today! It took about 2 hrs with no trouble at all. Drove the truck till it had about 3 gal left in the tank so it wouldn't be too heavy. Great instructions.
Took it to the station and ran 33 gal in it in about 3 min. Never did that before!

Another way to prevent foaming is to use gasoline.

I guess I'm gonna have to check into this kit. My wife HATES going to fill up with me.
