Installing Subs and Amp, Help!!
Guys, I moved this to its own thread hoping I can get this done before lunch so I can drive the truck...dash is still apart. I am installing a new to me Infinity ref 310 power amp to power a pair of Infinity ref 12 inch woofers currently in a sealed box ready for install. I pulled the factory deck and noticed that there are audio L, audio R and audio Grnd on the factory harness. Are these speaker level, pre amp level or just a control circuit. Can they be used for the inputs or is the only way to connect the subwoofer amp with line level converters. This post is great so far. I'm a 2003 with Infinity system. Thanks ks
Oh yeah forgot, where did everyone tap into the 12v powersupply for the amp. We have 8 guage wire available for power. The amp is bridged and the speakers are 4 ohms in parallel and 2 ohms in series, right?? We are going to be using a significant amount of power when and if it gets cranked. Your expert help is muchly appreciated. Thanks ks

I would assume the Audio L & R outputs are speaker level, but assuiming is never good, so... if you have a spare speaker, or can wire an existing speaker to the output in question, you'll be able to turn on the head unit and tell if it's speaker level or not.
I would assume (again I hate to assume) if the outputs from the trucks head unit are spekaer level (high level), therefore, you would need a converter to pre-amp level (low level) so you can input the signal to your Infinity ref 310.
Does your 310 have low and high level inputs? - Many amplifiers do - check 1st.
I think you misspoke about the series/parallel combinations: Resistive and inductive impedances (Ohmic values) in series will add, i.e. if you have two speakers in series, each speaker being 2 Ohms, the resulting impedance seen by the amplifier will be 4 Ohms. Speaker impedances in parallel add like this:
1 / [ (1 / Impedance 1) + (1 / impedance 2) ] - this is applicable for resistive and inductive loads, i.e. speakers. i.e calcualte (1 / Impedance 1), and (1 / Impedance 2) seperately, then add them together. Then take 1 / (sum of your impedances) - and there you have it for parallel combinations of inductive and resistive components.
Please note capacitors (capacitive loads) are basically the opposite - but you don't really have any significant capacitance to worry about.

one more thing.... let us know how it sounds. I've got the infinity sound system, it's stock, and I think it sounds awesome, but it could use a little help on the bass end. I like the stock system because its crystal clear and has a nice balance of bass and treble (sp?). I don't want to upset the balance at lower volume levels, but at higher levels the infinity system must limit the bass to keep distortion low, it does not scale linearly with volume - which is a good thing because it doesn't distort much.
Do you have the stock infinity sound system?
Let me know how you like the new subs and amp. I may consider something in the future.
Good Luck and thank in advance,
Eric

also what do you listen to mostly, I guess I listen to rock, country, just about everything EXCEPT rap. I want a system that's good for Metallica, Nickel Back, AC/DC, Lynryd Skynyrd, Zeppelin, etc...
I can attest to the Infinity speaker systems quality sound when adding an amp. I've read some posts with people saying the stock Infinty system is not very good, but I disagree. I feel it is very well balanced. My brother says it's not adjustable enough for him and I told him that he must normally listen to music outside the normal intended range of how the music was edited.
I added one Dual Voice coil 10" sub under the RR seat using an Infinity 710 amp. Crutchfield said that was to much power for the Perfect series Sub I bought but I know I have power in reserve. With this much power I'm amazed what one 10"sub can do. It Rocks! More bass than I'll need in my truck. I think the Dual Voice Coil is the key to it. I think that places like Crutchfield would rather sell you a more expensive box and two Subs instead. I don't know how anyone can need more bass than what my truck has with a single 10.
I also got the Dash board control **** for the Infinity amp. I have it set up so I can turn the Factory units bass down almost all the way and very conveniently use the **** to adjust the sub volume for any song. This allows me to turn the factory volume all the way to max without the factory speakers rattling. I mounted the **** where the factory Passenger side airbag switch would go.
I just ran the power cables from the drivers side battery through the Firewall and mounted the amp under the drivers seat.

Instead of tapping a wire for the amps power you need to run a cable to the battery or under hood fuse box. I would go with 8 guage for that amp. I use 4 gauge with a capacitor on mine but it is 750 watt amp. If you go with a big wire your amp will not be starved for power and your subs will hit much better. I was amazed at the difference my cap made.

Eastment, I guarantee you won't be disappointed with adding an amp if that's the kind of music you listen to. On most songs I have to have my amp control turned 3/4 of the way down
It cost me about $750 from Crutchfield and I installed it myself. It make take a few days of adjusting to get it to sound perfect but you'll be happy with the results. I think one other key is using the amp crossover to keep all the very low bass and the very high mid bass cut-off to the sub. That removes all the droning if your listening to Dj's talk. I can say that the bass in my truck is very very punchy. To me it sounds like there is a bass drum in the back seat, but I've cut off most of the Super low Buzziness that Rap fans like.
Screw all the stereo shops saying you have to spend $3000 and replace the entire system to get good sound.

Thanks for the advoce guys, I'll try adding a single sub under on of the seats, add a crossover as well.
Thanks all!
Eric
Guys, I finally got my 2 12" infinity reference speakers installed. I took the line levelers off the right and left rear speaker outputs on the harness on the back of the deck. Trust me there is still bass signall there. With the bass turned all the way down the bass is unreal yet still ballance with the rest of the system. This allows the rear to still get full power at the midrange and higher and it sounds great. I'm going to shop for some 6.5 fronts , a new deck with steering wheel control module and then I'm done. The subs and fronts would probably be 90% of perfection for me. The only problem is my rearview mirror is useless.

I don't think you'd be to impressed by the pix. The subs are in a double box until I have time to get the under rear seat box built. Let's just say my 6 seat truck is now a five seat truck that rocks. ks
fountain1fan, Do you mean from the stock speakers? The only stock speakers that are getting any bass now are the front doors. Remember I am running the deck bass at -8 its lowest while running the subs at 20-300 Hz with + 5 on the sub amp bass boost (20 to 40 Hz). Currently running at 4 ohms on subs, but when I get a capacitor in place I'll switch to 2 ohms so I can run the amp at 30% of max (120 watts rms) versus the 100% of 4 ohm max (115 watts). ks
