Need help selecting a winch set-up

I have a friend who got his old Dodge Ram stuck in the mud on his property.
He has a newer 2003 2500 4X4 with 4.10's and the Hemi. He is looking for a
stout HD winch and also wants to mount the winch himself and try to pull his
older Ram out of the mud.
Can someone suggest a good set-up
Place to look online
Explain how a winch mounts
Pictures ?

Thanks in advance

i currently have a milemarker 12,000 lb winch mounted on my front hitch receiver on my 04 2500. i like this set up-because i can remove the winch anytime i need to. i have always had warn winches-but for the number of times i use it in a year- i could not justify a grand or more for a winch. i bought the milemarker on ebay for 450.00 bucks including shipping.

Do a search on ebay. Your gonna have to pay at least $350 for a decent one and shipping usually runs between $80 and $100 on them. Get a winch bigger than 8,000 lbs. Do not be fooled into buying an 8,000 lb unit like the Ramsey, They are junk. Also make sure you pay attention to the hp and the line speed. You may get a 9,000 lb winch that is geared to pull in 1 foot a minute. NOT GOOD.
Good luck in your search.

The best winches out there are the hydraulic Milemarker winches, they are priced comparable to name brand electrics. This is the winch that the military uses. They will pull all day long, never overheat, last a very long time and are sealed! You can winch under water or mud. They mount just like any other winch and even can get quick disconnects, like a snow plow, if you want to take it off. The HI12000 has 2 speeds, low gear for winching and high gear for very fast line retrievel. Most big rollbacks use hydraulic winches. These are made for continous duty, not very short pulls like electric winch. Best to mount them on a HD winch bumper, removable cradles are not very HD.

Electrics are best for pulling you over a log or out of a ditch. 10-20 ft. pull at most
Hydraulics are best for long pulls, like up a 1/4 mile powerline, thru a 100 ft. mud bog etc...

l'll second the Milemarker winches. I have one on my truck that I use with a gin pole setup to load and unload my trailer. The winch is a 10k hydraulic that will lift more than the truck will handle, used it today. It makes me a lot of money just having it on my truck in case it is needed. $50 an hour.

I had the MM 12k hydro on my Jeep. Single line 3-wraps on the drum and I bent my frame

Just waiting for a nice full-bumper replacement to put it on the Dodge.

Don't know if the mounting would be a good deal for you, but I have had great use out of the M15000. It has 90 feet of 7/16 cable and a good recovery speed empty. I have been more than satisfied.

Milemarker or Warn.

If you go hydraulic, Milemarker's the leader. If you go electric, get a warn 12000 lb or 15000 lb winch. 8000 lb won't cut it. Do not get the milemarker electric winches - they are imported junk. He should get a nice winch bumper to mount it to. Check out http://www.hansonenterprise.com/home.htm. He does a lot of custom stuff and would probably make one for a Ram pickup. There's lots of other winch bumper companies out there that are good, too, like Ruenel http://www.reunel.com/.

I sell Milemarker winches! Why do you say they are junk? They are slower than the top of the line Warn's that are made for rock crawling and cost twice as much. That's only because they are geared a lot lower. If you look closely at MM, Warn,Ramsey etc....they look identical. A MM PE8000 looks identical to a Ramsey RE8000. A Warn 12000 looks identical to a MM E12000. I bet they are made at the same plant, probably in China. At least MM hydro's are US made!

Sorry to offend. I bought one of the first E8000's that Milemarker sold. Installed entirely then realized that solenoid was bad (i.e. didn't spool out after a couple of winchings). Sent it back to MM, sent me another one, installed it again, that one spooled in and never stopped spooling, ripping apart whole winch assembly before I got the battery cable disconnected to stop it. Milemarker, as excellent customer service as they have, sent me a whole new winch, which I just sold because I didn't want to spend more hours installing another one. Bought Warn M8000 and has worked flawlessly for 3 years. Just my experience. I'm sure you'd have the same opinion on any product you've bought that was 0 for 2.

I've never heard of that happening before but anything is possible! It's great that customer service took care you. I guess any product could have a lemon or two! Like I said earlier they all come off the same assembly lines, just get a couple differant specs and differant names.

I have a Warn 9500i mounted on my truck. It has a fast no speed and pulls pretty good too. I've had the truck stuck once at the farm up to the axles. It did put a load on it till I got out of ruts. I do carry a ****** block in the tool box though.
