extended cranking to start 06 when warm

My 06 has under 2500 miles and ever since i left the dealership sometimes after the engine gets warmed up and you shut it off and go to start it again a little bit later (10-15 minutes) it doesn't want to start. Sometimes you have to turn the key all the way back off, and try again, and yes i wait for the light to go off. Sometimes it just takes alot longer cranking time that it typically does (like 2-3 times as long as usual). It seems to be getting worse as the weather continues to get nicer (now in the 40-50's). Anyone else had this problem??

On a positive note I broke the 13mpg barrier today for the first time since i left the dealership . Pretty happy since i have only been getting 10-12.5 if i'm lucky. Hope it continues to go up as it breaks in more.

My n14 cranks like that and Cummins says that it is because it has to build oil pressure before it can fire. It is another common rail.

I don't think it's an oil pressure issue, but I'm not sure. This is a known issue with the 06's. My '06 does it too occasionally. Every other one I've ever heard of (including mine) that does it only do it occasionally. If it refused to fire the injectors until oil pressure built up, it would do it every time. I have seen something about the crank sensor and cam sensor needing to get in phase with each other. Apparently, the '06 ecm checks for rationality between the two sensors, something the older ones don't do. Depending on where in its rotation the engine is when it comes to rest, it could take up to two rotations of the crankshaft to satisfy the computer. I don't know whether this is actually true or not, but it would tend to explain the random nature of when the trucks are hard to start. Of course, that doesn't explain why most only seem to do it when they're warm...

It really starts hard when i have it in my heated shop at about 60 degrees all day long while i am out working. Starts harder then when it is 10 degrees overnight, go figure. I am gonna take it in to Dodge i think and see what they say, doesn't seem right to me.

jrogers, I just took some pic's this weekend, will post as soon as I get a chance, maybe tomorrow.

Mine does this also once in a while. Had a few TSBs flashed a couple days ago and hasn't done it since though it hasn't been long enough yet to see if it really cured it.

Stopped by my local dealership today and talked to the service advisor about this problem and he said they are aware of the the problem, but no fix at this time, he said it had something to do with a sensor/temperature changes?? Hope they get a fix soon, it is quite annoying to never know how long you are gonna have to hold the starter to get it to fire up.

Currently in 80 degree weather in Tucson, AZ - truck often does not want to start first try. It always will start on the second attempt.

well, the hard starts (extended cranking when engine warm) seem to have been cured on my truck, after several good "warmings". I had all the applicable TSBs flashed (3) and it hasn't happened since. Also the truck seems a bit more responsive and mileage has definitely improved... abruptly after the flash. Tranny shifts also improved some though this may be solely due to the APPS reset during the flash. Tranny still lurches/bangs into Drive when shifting from Reverse when warm, my only real concern now. Wish I knew if this is supposedly "Normal" behavior of the '06 48RE.

fyi, the build date on my CTD suggested that specific TSBs did not apply... but they did (SmartScan) and they appear to have helped.

That's the second time (after me) that I've heard reflashes having a dramatic positive impact on mileage. Track it for 1-2 tankfuls and hand-calc, then report back. We may have a rush on Dodge dealers for reflashes! [grin]

Had the flash done 18-003-06 and fixed the starts and yes I think a mileage increase. I will holdf out for a hand calc and the end of the tank, but I think I may see an easy 2 mpg since the flash.

Didn't someone say or figure out that the hard starting problem seemed to be in the trucks with the 6spd? I have an 06 auto and have not had this issue yet.... but I do have the relatively bad mileage.
