extended cranking

Iv got a 01 HO that in the morning and anytime you let it sit for more than 30 min it takes a lot of cranking to start. Once it starts it runs fine, but you have to crank on it for like 10 to 15 seconds before it will start, you think that is lift pump or IP maybe?

hay, first check to see if you have any fuel leaks, sounds like air is getting in your fuel system. Also check your fuel pressure, probably need a lift pump. My truck did the same thing so i put a big line kit a walbro 392 pump. good luck

Welcome to my life. I've been fighting this problem for a long time. I've replaced a connector tube, all the fuel line, the over flow valve, and all the o-rings on the connector tubes. I have no clue. Member RowJ and BigSmoky have the same problem and they don't know either.

Yup. I honestly have no clue what the problem is. Guess next thing I'm going to tackle is replacing all of the return fuel lines and seeing if that helps cause I have no idea what else to do.

Ya know that thought has crossed my mind but I don't see how it could just randomly start leaking. Maybe once I get this valve cover replaced and clean the oil and everything else up I'll see if it's leaking but I don't think it is.

After you get the leaks fixed and do all of the above, check the fuel pressure. You really need a full time gage. It's possible that the check valve on the IP is bad but I haven't seen many posts that this fixed the problem. All else being said, check the codes. It's entirely possible the IP is slowly dieing. The hard starting creeps up on you. The difference on mine was night and day and I really hadn't noticed much harder starting except when it was -0 outside.

You need to check for air leaks. Buy some clear tubing at your local hardware store and put it between the filter and the IP. Start the truck and look for bubbles in the line, if you see bubbles you have an air leak. Use this method any where there is a splice in the line, when you do not see bubbles, the leak is between the two points. Where is the lift pump located on your truck?? Is it in the tank?? If it is not in the tank, and you traced your leak back that far, you can check the fuel module in the tank with a hand vaccume pump. You will need to remove the module from the tank and put it in a pail of fuel, use just enough fuel to cover the fuel pick-up. Now put a vaccume on it, if it suck up fuel it is good. If it sucks air or air/fuel mix it is bad. You need to check this because your preasure guage will measure air or fuel preasure. If you are pumping air it will take out the VP44(ask me how I know).
