Well, I heading out west to Alberta which is about 4000+mile drive. I'm dropping my truck off at the dealer to have a few things checked over. My question is, is there anything that I should have double checked/have changed before the long drive, and what are some things that I should take along with me just in case something happens. This is my first time driving out west, so any info would be great.

SOunds like you are having everything checked out BEFORE you leave. Only suggestions I can make are things you can take WITH YOU for the trip. Just in case....

I would take the following:
Few fuel filters
New oil filter and oil
Basic tools
new Drive belt
Upper and lower rad hoses
Thermostat


Those are all things I carry with me daily....

 

Take lots of money to buy fuel.

I drive 1000 miles a week. I carry a spare fuel filter, tools and a tire plug kit. I've used the tire plug kit 3 times, once for my tire, and twice helping others. I have never needed to pull the spare fuel filter out. For everything else, I have a Motorola Q and my Dodge Business Link card.

You could plan for all kinds of "what ifs", but the reality is that the odds of needing anything (other than a lot of cash for fuel as mentioned before) is very low.

Air up the tires, fill the washer fluid, check the oil and tranny fluid levels, and fly. That's what I do.

Oh yeah, Rain-X the windshield, it makes a huge difference on the highways.

 

Music, the stretch between winnipeg and calgary is the most boring you will ever be on.

 

A tire that fits as your spare!! Running 37s, if you do blow one out you may be in trouble depending how remote you plan on going.

 

I'd argue Northern Ontario. At least in Sask. there is the horizon and some towns to see. In Ontario, you can drive for what feels like days before coming to a place to get fuel/food/seeing a person.

Oh yeah... IF (note the caps) you plan on driving at night, carry spare fuel, lots of stations aren't open at night, and they are dodgy on opening times in the morning. Keep your lights clean. Lots of critters.

 

Forget all that stuff except the $ get tripple A and call it good. truck is still under warrenty!!!!

 

Northern Ontario cell reception will be non existant.
I would carry a air filter, oil filter and a fuel filter. Carry a filter wrench and make sure the spare tire matches and has air.

You can get oil in any town no matter where your at. As for the rad hoses, Cummins has shops all over the place out there.

Check all your fluid levels, rad, tranny, diffs, transfer case etc before you leave, and then when you fuel up cehck under your truck for leaks.

Carry a spare tire and a fuel filter or two. I'd carry a few basic hand tools and also some extra cloths or blankets to stay warm if you do break down. I agree with another poster, you can prepare for all kinds of what if's and it's not practical to carry alot of extras. Our trucks are some of the most reliable trucks on the road so bring plenty of cash for fuel and have fun on your trip! I love long road trips!

 

After driving 8000 miles in three weeks last fall.....I'd bring everything mentioned above.(Rad hoses optional). The one thing I needed most was a good towel and window cleaner to wipe the bugs off the windshield.
Watch out for deer, and have fun.
