Center caps on DRW

I was just told by discount tire company that they could not rotate my tires because they were afraid that they would break the center cap. He said they put all the force they felt like they could before breaking it. They said to take it to the dealer which I did. His response: "Just use a big screwdriver...it seems like it is gonna break but it will come off. It will be covered under warranty if it doesn't".

I just made the recent discovery that those great looking wheels and cap are nothing but plated plastic over black steel wheels. What a disappointment indeed.

That is my only complaint about my truck.........lousy wheels/tires. Why didn't they have some Aluminum wheels designed for the 17X6? I see Chip Foose do it all the time on TV.

That will be my first "big" purchase for the truck......when somebody comes out with them!

Why not just remove & replace the center caps yourself?

After watching the overworked, underpaid, un-trained shop employees almost destroy my hubcaps trying to hammer them back on.... & even then I had to pull & correctly place all the hubcaps on my van afterwards.... (getting a free rotation at my local discount tire shop)

I learned to just pull the hubcaps and leave them at home, out of harms way!!!

Of course this is my first dually & I expect to find that most shops aren't going to want to do a correct rotation... too much work, so maybe that cap thing is just an excuse!
(I think I'd be pretty embarrassed to own a tire shop that couldn't remove a simple center cap!)

Good Luck!

After my last dually tire installation fiasco, I am looking forward to the next one. The kid installing the wheels had no idea about alignment pins or which one goes where.
They told me my front rim was too "bent" to put on the front. When I asked if they did a run out, they said no, it needed too much weight. I asked the tire be broken down and turned and reinstalled and it balanced fine. They actually were trying to mount the front rim on the rear when I stopped them.
I have not checked to see if the front and inside rear have the same offset yet. One more thing to add to the list.

All your complaints are why I take my DRW to the dealer. While some may not like the plastic, I do, because it's cheaper to replace.

The correct tool for removing those plastic caps is under the passenger seat with the jack assembly. It has a hook on the end, just pull. Good luck.

I did it today myself. I think defdog2 is right...they used it as an excuse not to have to mess with a dually.

Weatherbyman,
Don't know if you like the MT classic style, but AE has their 589's in 17X6 duals with 3200lb load rating for around a Buck fifty. Check my pics... the 17X6's are only on the rears.
