California trucks

Might have been covered about a thousand times...but I'm a first gener...and my friend just bought one so here it goes:

2004. California model, 235 horse.

Now the question is..what is exactly different with these trucks? He already put on a CAI and full 4" exhaust with a Aero muffler. He's looking at the full Bully Dog computer with moniter...and the guy told him that it would bump his motor up the 325 horse specs. True? Or does his truck have a different turbo? I personally think it's just a computer thing for cali specs..but he thinks there is more to it.

Thoughts?

I know it doesnt have the oil jets for cooling under the pistons. I think there may have been something about sodium filled valves, but i am not sure.

Im going to keep my eye on this thread cause I have been wondering the same thing for a while. I bought my truck in California before I knew anything about them having lower HP ratings. It realy is BS. It's one hell of a strict state.

I have a 235/CA and added an EDGE EZ. The difference will amaze him. BTW, turbo is the same.

Ok.

The guy that is selling him the Bully Dog setup is saying...when it gets plugged in, it will calibrate to 325 horse as it's stock setting. He said the only difference is the computer programming, but we suspect more.

Thanks so far..keep it coming.

Bunch of little stuff, added together.

As well as a larger rear end, and the 48RE tranny on the 600/610 trucks.

Piston oil jets
Larger Intercooler
Triple Shot Fuel Injection
"Kitty Cat"
Larger Exhaust (3.5 vs 4inch on the 600/610)

The 04 CA model will have the 48RE, so he is good there. The 48RE came out in early 03 build dates.

Dont, quote me on this one but sometime in the early-mid 70's California started the strict emissions laws. When I worked as a the parts guy for Montgomery Wards Auto Express back in Houston during the 80's, on several occasions I ordered the wrong parts because the car was a "California car". After getting burned twice and losing my commissions because of crap head mechanics that could'nt tell what sort of car they were working on, let alone what state it was from I began looking into the vin numbers of all the vehicles that required parts under the hood. I quickly found out how to decode the vin number, which helped in ordering the right parts. A couple other states back East and out West use CA emission cars.(someone in the know chime in on this one) Matter of fact, all the motorcycles (maybe except Harleys) sold in Hawaii are sold with California emissions installed. During my 8yr stay there my 97 Kawi ZX-6R and 92 Suzi Can of tuna bought new were installed with California Emissions.

I got 3 more monthes stationed in SoCal. And Bye, Bye California. I will never ever come back here. If the Marines say I'm coming back, I'll fight to the bottom, there is no way I'll come back here, never.
