Bought 05 Cummins Did I Get Jinxed or Did I Score

Well I'm new here. To ring in the new year, I bought an 05 2500 2x4 Quad Cab Short Bed Cummins. I really like the truck alot. I bought this truck on Dec 30th. I paid $12,500 for this truck from a big Ford dealer. The truck is in excellent shape, with only 112,000 miles on it. It runs and drives excellent. Truck looks like it never pulled anything. It just has the regular bumper hitch on it. Bed is in excellent condition, no major scrapes or scratches looks brand new. I thought the price was really good, especially with the decent milage. Most trucks in my area of Texas within this price range usually have 200,000+ miles on them. I was looking for another Ford, but with all of the horrible problems with the 6.0 I just couldn't justify spending the money on one. I had a 2000 4x4 Ford F250 with the 7.3 that I rolled a few months ago to avoid hitting a car. Did I get jinxed by the dealer, or did I score good here?

Sounds like you scored especially if it is a Texas truck as they tend to stay in really good shape bodywise. If it runs well, has no blow-by, and good oil pressure I would say you got a good deal. Make sure you get a 2-micron fuel filter on there to help save your injectors (they are expensive to replace) Read all the threads and you will find tons of useful info on these trucks. Good Luck!

You done good!! I searched this and other forums for two years before I bought my 05 Cummins. I had always been a Ford man but in the move to diesel power there was only one choice, Cummins. Many folks believe the 05 to be among the best of years because it has the 48RE transmission, the best upholstery for the seats and the fuel lift pump in the tank instead of firewall. I've had mine 3 years now. You may want to run Power Service Diesel Kleen found at all Walmart strores. I was getting some rough idle on start up and even had two injectors replaced under warranty. It continued to do it intermittently until I tried using Diesel Kleen. Now it has not idled rough in over two and half years!! Do a transmission fluid change immediately and you should have no problems. I plan on having this truck for many years to come as a tow vehicle. It only has 52K miles. I've heard these engines are designed for 300K miles and many have gone double that!! Mine gets 21mpg highway non towing. Ford really lost it's a** on the 6.0 diesel. It cost them a lot of good repeat customers. I had owned 4 new Ford F series in a row but all were gas.

Nice find

One thing to check on, some of the intercoolers on that year had plastic side tanks. I've seen a few of them blow out the gasket, we replaced the IC with one of the welded tanks!

That sounds like a real good deal. I was looking for a 4x4 but for that price it would be tough to pass up a 2x4 that cheap...

WOW, never towed! Good chance it's all stock, too. The only thing that could be better for an 05 would be the nv5600 6 spd. I thought the plastic ICs only blow when the fuel is turned up, maybe not. I love the rack and pinion on the 2wds. Craig

Sounds like a nice deal. To Grey Wolf's point, if you're driving down the freeway and you lose your boost, and the egts go way up, check your intercooler. This happened to me on the way to the desert. The side plastic will separate slightly (or alot) from the intercooler. In my case, I was able to still drive the truck but I had to leave the trailer detached. My new Banks intercooler looks solid.
Good Luck with the 05!!
