Does the compressor run....

....when the A/C button is off? I got a freon leak this summer and haven't gotten it fixed yet. So, I've been running the heat this winter with the a/c button off thinking it would be ok. Everytime I cut on/off the fan, I hear the engine load/unload like the compressor is kicking on/off just like when running the a/c. Am I hurting anything until I get the a/c fixed?

When in Defrost mode the A/C is engaged, if it becomes too low on R-134a it will not engage the Compressor Clutch.

Ahh, forgot about defrost even though the a/c button is not engaged. Will it burn up something even running in defrost with no freon? Thanks.

Yes it sure could. It'll have a low pressure switch that *should* prevent it from cycling with low refrigerant, but for peace of mind you might want to just disconnect the connector on the clutch.

It will cycle on and try to pump for a short time, then cycle off and repeat till you turn it off of defrost. it's best to unplug the power from the clutch.

Thanks. Are we talking just a plug/harness attached to the compressor somewhere? Just one or any others? Haven't crawled under yet to see.

There's a plug for the compressor clutch. Pull that.
