BFG rugged trails
have become dangerous in the rain. about 34k on them and not at the wear indicators. Looking at the tread pattern, I have noticed there are no grooves cut to allow water to escape from the center section of the tire
.
Looking for new tires has become frustrating to say the least. MTR's look like a good option 285/70/17. However, I am afraid they will only last about 20k
be careful on those stock BFG tires in the rain. - JKE

The traditional 5 rib/3 groove tire with lots of siping seems to do well in the rain, provided the compound isn't too hard. The Michelin LTX A/S, the other OEM tire, does ok, but on the water filled ruts in the Paciifc NW ( the ruts caused by studded tires) they could still wander at freeway speed so I added some additional siping and they do fine now. They do ok in snow but really bad on ice. Another 265/70-17 load range E, the Toyo Open Country, seems to get good marks for rain and snow but tire life can be short.
I see more than a few BFG A/Ts with additional siping around here, I guess also because like the Rugged Trail they don't have big rain grooves and can get slick in deeper water.
From what I've seen so far perhaps an ideal tire for the 4x4 trucks would be the Michelin XPS traction, load range E, 265 and 285 sizes, with additional full depth siping and pinning for studs. I suggested that to Michelin but didn't hear anything back.

45 mph or over is an issue. Truck slides like it is on ice when it rains. Won't let the wife drive it. No funds for wheels. This would solve everything (read 18"). Really want PJ dirt grip.
May get the tool and cut my own grooves (I think siping is small slits???) 5 to 10 mm wide on the outer rib to release the water and see how this goes. Not sure if this is do-able. These tires stink offroad too. Not really good for anything. Offroad = just trying to get across a wet bushhogged field.
Thanks Men - JKE

Hmmm, interesting. My BFG Rugged Trails are fine at 30k miles; and appear to have lots of tread life left in them. Still have all the sipes across the entire cross section of tread. I run about 65 psi front and a little less in the rears. I just rotated them this past weekend so I need to adjust the pressures again. Thanks for the reminder.
When these wear out, I'll be looking for the exact same kind of tires. Traction in the snow is excellent - up to 21" anyways. Not much bushhogging here...

I have the 315/70/17 BFG A/T now and like them. On my previous truck (Chevy 2003 Z71), I ran a couple of sets of the 265/75/16 Wrangler MT/R and LOVED them. I got really good traction both on and off road and couldn't hydro if I tried. Seems like I got about 35k out of them.

I guess no one is interested in the 4 BFG Rugged Trail 265/70R/17s in my garage then. I put the BFG 315/70R/17 All-Terrain T/As at about 2000 miles, so I really don't know much about the performance of the Rugged Trails.
I do like the BFG 315/70R/17 All-Terrain T/As, have had the same tire in many sizes on different 4x4s for the last 15 years or so.

RamWheelsBy4 - You may be able to sell them, but it would take a smokin' deal. I believe the majority of the men do not like the tire.
A friend of mine has 4 take offs with 1k milage. He said he would sell them to me for $100 each.
I told him I would have a hard time wasting $200 on all 4.
He still has them sitting in his garage...that was a couple of months ago.

I sure like mine. I like them better than the KOs' which I was stuck on for along time in my Fords.
I use the Rugged Trails hard in some really awful country. No problems in the rain either. Quiet, run true and no sidewall failures yet. Given rough conditions, I replace tires at 25 K.
Surprised me how well they have held up.
