This is getting real old real quick... The A/C on my 2003 diesel went out again for the 3rd time! This has been an ongoing problem for the last 14 months and the dealer as usual shotguns the repairs. For any that are interested, all 3 times happened when I was on an extended drive in excess of 2 hours. After two hours, the cabin would warm up so I would turn the fan on a higher setting to find out that their was no airflow out the vents. The system was iced up. Took to the dealer first time they said low on freon, added freon and sent me on my way. Second road trip happened again took it back and they said my refridgerent lines must be obstructed and replaced all lines in the engine compartment and orafice tube. Third road trip 2 weeks ago happened again, took it back with exact same symtoms. Had the truck for a week and said they think they have it fixed this time. Had to take the dash apart and replace the evaporator temp probe.

After all these times and the weeks spent in the shop you really get the feeling that your vehicle is a guinnee pig for either inept or new and untrained technicians. Of course it has to go back again because the dash is so full of rattles from its tear apart that it drives me crazy.

Warm fuzzy feeling buying a 30,000$ chrysler vehicle that had this problem since new and their "5 star" tecnicians need three or four attempts to fix...NOT!

Do you have your controls set on recycle or "max" a/c? High humidity can cause the evaporator to ice up. If you run with the a/c on and the window cracked open, the humidity can ice up the evaporator. The southeast has been extremely humid lately and this is a problem for auto and home a/c if the outside air is allowed in while the a/c is running. I run my fan all the time in the house while the compressor cycles normally and the a/c in the truck and Durango are set on "max" or the two settings all the way counter clockwise on the dial to prevent outside air being brought in and icing in the evaporator.

 

Typical dealer service. Just start replacing things. If your truck were out of warranty you would be hearing some stunning stories about how the original problem may still be happening, but you REALY did need all of the items repaced from visits one and two.

 

Exact same problem. Happened numerous times on a trip from Colorado to Florida, and back.

After turning the AC off for about a half hour, it would work fine for about two hours, and then the problem would return.

Technicians said it was from icing up, but they "couldn't duplicate" the problem.

The good news is that it hasn't happened since that trip, which was nearly two months ago.

So, I'll keep my fingers crosssed.

30,000 miles, and the AC problem is the only problem I've had with the truck. Great truck! Love it!

 

This may sound bizarre but I was having similar problems. I found a few things that made it work again. Like turning the **** to defrost. Boom, cold air again.

I pulled the dash open (one screw by the bag-hook to get the trim off), and them removed and reseated the connections on the AC control unit. Did this at a fuel stop on a road-trip. Has been working GREAT ever since.

 

Thought I was the only one! Mine stopped blowing cold air or any air, but the fan was still running. If I turned off the a/c switch about 10 minutes later it would work like normal (for a while). I've taken it in three times with an additional one yesterday.

Trip 1, changed selector switches.
Trip 2, changed hvac door components,
Trip 3, put dye in system
Trip 4, checked dye, found leak, replaced seal, recharged system

Thanks all for replying with the same problems... I've been away on business all week and this morning, (SAT) the truck is going back for all the dash rattles. I forgot to mention in my original post that when the unit freezes up, I turn on heat full blast and after 10 minutes or so I hear all the ice give way in the ducts, water begins pouring out on the passengers feet and I again have airflow thru the vents. Funny isnt it, I have to tell my passengers to sit indian style or they're going to get wet!

As to what setting I was using, I was running in ricirc mode which is counter clockwise. Doesnt matter though as it should not be doing that.

 

Mine also does this and was ok last summer.My neighbors also does this with 130k on his and was also ok last summer.Both have been recharged and seemed ok for a month or so and started it again.This issue as well as the differance in air temp from left to right side I think will be a MAJOR issue as time marches on with these trucks.HOPE D.C. reads these threads.

 

Sounds like maybe the drip tube could be kinked or blocked. It's nice and cool now with low humidity so naturally it won't do it for the maniacs at the dealership.

 

Mine pours water with no problem.

 

You may want to make sure the low preasure/cycle switch is working properly. It's normally located on the air dryer on the passenger side close the fire wall. When mine stopped working the compressor would not cycle so it ran all the time causing the freezing up problem. Simple to replace disconect wire unscrew. Maybe this will help.

 

Mine does the same thing. I have never had another truck do this.

I had similar problems with ac unit failing on 03 hemi, on 4th attempt to fix problem dealer ordered a new control unit and it seemed to fix the problem. Not sure but I heard they were problems with unit.
