05 5.9 exhaust replacement

Hi,
My muffler and tailpipe has rotted (lasted 5 yrs 115k mi)and I need a replacement plan. I tow a 7000 lb boat so I need not to pick up a drone when towing. Truck has a cat and appears to have 1st joint after cat at muffler. Took quick look at genos replacements ansa's and see there from the turbo back- eliminate cat and have straight through muffler no baffles. I'd like to just replace what's rotted and retain the cat due to NYS Inspections. anyone have any experience with this? Just need muffler and tailpipe option. Money's getting tight

The most economical approach would be to have an exhaust shop bend you up a straight pipe from the cat back. If that's a little too loud, cut out a section towards the rear and put in an OEM resonator (probably a bunch of guys on here have them laying in their garages collecting dust). Or throw an OEM muffler on, prolly get one for cheap.
I'm running cat/no muffler/oem resonator and the truck rumbles nice, but is not loud in the cab at all, except under hard accel with the trailer, and there's no drone, youu can just hear the exhaust. Cruising at any speed with a trailer, even in the hills, no drone.

Mine just did the same thing at 100,000 miles.. The joint at both ends of the muffler rusted through. I used a 4" exhaust band Name: 72640.jpg

Hey grit dog, just wondering does the resonator have to be near the rear of the exhaust to work, or could you place it farther up stream, such as between the cat and stock muffler location. I ask cause I installed a 5" cat back MBRP system, and other than at idle or really low rpm's, it is just plain loud. No where near what the same system (cept turbo back) on my old early 04 dually six speed sounded like. I don't mind the loudness, but would prefer it to be a little lower in tone and rumble a bit more like my 04.

So since I still have the resonator and muffler, thought of puttin the res between the cat and 4-5" joint.

Also, I installed the MBRP muffler were the directions specified, basically were the oem was, but I have since heard that if I were to move it farther forward it would help on loudness and drone. so right now it goes cat, 5" extension, 5" muffler, then the rest of the system over the axle.

Now I'm thinkin of swapin the muffler and extension piece around so the muffler is next to the cat, instead of 3' away, and put the res in. Think it would be worth the hassle?? Course the exhaust has been on for about a yr so shouldn't be too rusty YET!!.
