PM Returned...

Gypsyman is right. I was too impatient to do that and ended up stripping the heads of my screws out.

I've got about 300 miles with the EGR unplugged. Still running good, and seeing pretty good mpg numbers on the overhead, average at 18 something typically. In town and freeway mix. That includes about 150 miles of driving with two dirtbikes and gear in the bed.

Hoping to fill her up this weekend and calc the mileage. I know a full tank would be better, but as little as I drive this is the only way I'll know something soon.

BTW: does anyone notice a different sound to the engine when you jump on it, or are cruising at 75 mph or better? Could be the new turbo.

Unplugging the EGR definitely advances the timing some so you may get some timing rattle especially when the engine is cold. It's not enough to hurt the engine though. My engine idles louder with the EGR unplugged too but once it's warmed up I don't notice any different sound.....

I just unplugged my EGR today and have only driven 30 miles. So far it is running fine. I haven't had a flash since I bought the truck in October of 07. I was just wondering how I would know if I needed to remove the butterfly valve? Would it be running poorly right off the bat? Thanks

It sounds a bit deeper and a bit louder than before. Not a turbo whistle, more like a roar from the engine or exhaust. No rattling that I can tell.

Just did my first hand calc mileage and got 17.4 average for 265 miles of driving, the overhead liar was saying 18.6. I need to go a greater distance and check again. This new tank of gas already has the overhead liar reporting 20.1 after only 80 miles.

Story time
I know it isn't EGR related, but we got a light rain the other day, enough to get the road wet, and they had recently oiled the pavement in my neighborhood. I had already driven a few miles on the wet pavement, so I didn't have any reason suspect traction problems, but when I turned left off of a major street into my neighborhood I ended up with a killer power slide fishtale.

Scared the wife, and surprised me. Thankfully, I know how to correct the truck in this situation. When I let off the go pedal and turned the wheel back into the slide it still slide for probably another 20 feet perpendicular to the street. Good thing there were no cars parked on the street, I would have certainly taken out one of them.

Crap, forgot to mention that the mileage numbers really are great for me. I used to get those numbers even when the EGR was connected. My average is usually in the mid 16's.

I unplugged about 3 weeks or more ago, and made a trip up to the smokies from Eastern NC, pretty good trip, and hand calculated 22 mpg, it was nice, I got 400 miles in a half tank of diesel, I usually get that in an entire tank on a regular week, but highway milage in this thing with the EGR unplugged rocks.

I've managed to put more miles on this tank of gas. Still just mix driving, normal routine for me really. I'm getting much better readings from the overhead this time. Still gotta filler up and hand calc, but if the computer is right, I could get 700 miles out of this tank at this rate.

Hard to believe that just unplugging that EGR could have this much positive effect, but I have to admit it seems to be true. No, I'm just eager for someone to make a fooler plug so the CEL goes away.

New guy question

Been lurking and reading about unplugging egr and deleting dpf. I have '07 6.7and have had lots of time to get to know service dept. due to emissions issues. The truck was just returned with egr plumbing cleaned (was plugged), turbo cleaning (second time), new dpf filter.

Thoght this was great time to pull plug on egr and did so yesterday. Had question about other way stop egr without getting CEL. On the exhaust manifold where the egr tube attaches is a VOD actuator with cables (like motorcycle throttle cables that appear to run valve. Could these cables be removed to stop flow of egr ? The actator and could run and the other stepper motor valve on intake side could run (no codes) but the butterfly at the exhaust side actuator would not move. Not certain if this valve is spring loaded to stay shut or open. Any thoughts?

ok I actually read the full 20 pages because i have the check engine light. Right now it has happened 4 times and in the hsope being cleaned and turbo drilled. From what I hear it will not work and I will be in teh shop for the 5th time. My dealership has been great, but just doing what dodge tells them. I figure next time I will get the turbo replaced, but in NY the 5th time I will have my atty file for lemon law since just 1 year old and 9,000 miles on th etruck. I am afraid to do the dpf egr deletes because of the yearly emissions needed in NY plus I bought the extended warranty.

Basically asking anyone really have the turbo cleaning work and how are you all working around emissions?
and also how come you all put up with these issues and don't lemon law your trucks?

Sorry it took so long for me to report back. I did over 600 miles on the last tank, mixed in town and freeway. Again, usual routine for me. Got 19 mpg hand calculated.

Still hate seeing the CEL all of the time, but can't argue with the mpg gains. Truck seems to run better too, but that is just seat of the pants.

What do you attribute that to, Mike?

I believe the ECM would still be looking for positive pressure in the crossover tube, which could send the truck into limp mode... EGR-wise, seems as though the ECM is happier seeing "no sensor" rather than "no pressure".
