Would it work????

I am wondering if one could use 03/04 injector tips on a 04.5+ truck??

I understand that the early CR injectors have a narrower spray angle to spray into the re-entrant style bowl, but could that tight spray also work in a non-re entrant style piston???

I get why they wont work the other way around, but in theory would it work???

it could for a while. But you probably would end up burning up the top of the piston.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in but I do remember reading that it is possible and the motor will run.How good or how much power,I don't know.Seems to me that running alot of timing would put the tighter spray angle of the 03-04 injectors nicely in the bowl. One other question would be the hole count difference in the nozzles.I don't know how that would affect things.

It will work, just not as efficiently as the spray is concentrated more on the dome than the bowl. I don't think anyone has done anything definitively to provide emperical evidence as to the benefit/drawback of doing so. I look at it this way, when the Cummins engineers designed this stuff, if it would have worked better using a narrower angle in the wider, shallower bowl, then they would have gone that way to begin with.

the earlier nozzles have a WIDER angle, not tighter.

Neither substitution will work well.

Also, the earlier bowl is not a complete re-entrant style, but rather a hybrid design. The classic re-entrant is ineffective past about 18,000 PSI of injection pressure. Re-entrant design was last seen in the 24V Vp44 engines in 2002.

I think member Mikmaze (04.5 truck) had his dealership mistakenly put the early tips on his truck. It seemed to run fine on his truck but it did not put down the numbers he thought it would on the dyno.
