who has what... opinions needed

ok so how many people up here have efi live, and how has smarty,

i am trying to decide if i want anarchy tuning on efi live, or to get the software and tune the truck myself, it would be cool to control all aspects of my truck and to be able to modify easily and whenever its needed. i have never tuned myself.

or to just buy a smarty jr and be done with it.

this is for the 5.9 in my sig,
Also, can we adjust the trans? i dont like the shifting on the stock trans. and anarchy told me there wasnt really any trans tuning available because its mechanical.
I would also like to be able to adjust my tire size, i have 35's right now and my spedo is about 4-5 mph off which i dont like

i am on a very tight budget, but i will splurge for longevity.

Welcome to DTR...

The vehicle you have does not show in your sig.

Anarchy is correct... neither EFI live nor Smarty will change the way the tranny shifts. You'll need a new valve body for that.

Smarty jr vs EFI live is like apples and oranges... well, almost.

you say you have a tight budget. That screams smarty jr.

The tuning can get a little complicated which is why the tuners are set up the way they are. Novice tuners can expect novice results. However, I am sure you can adapt and gain knowledge over time.

What kind of engine modifications have you done/are planning to do? If the answer is not much, then smarty jr is for you. On the other hand if you intend to bomb the truck over time, then EFI is a better investment.

To make a better recommendation for you, more information from you is required as to what your goals are and what mods are done to the truck.

Sorry it's in my sig now,
I'm not looking for huge power, just safe power for longevity
And for towing, I'm not wanting to stick in a new tranny or anything any time soon, I have a intake right now, will probably delete the cat, and add more air later on

Possibly 50hp injector nozzles later on

Maybe

I have a Smarty CR for my '06 and love it on SW #4.

One of the diesel rag magazines (Diesel Power or Diesel World) did an article on whether there were any gains by deleting the cat a few years ago.

Unless you're looking for super high gains (over 500hp) their data (dyno/flow rate charts) showed incredibly small changes that provided absolutely no gains to exhaust flow or horsepower and proved it wasn't worth the time or expense to do a cat delete.

They did show that the mandrel bent exhaust was a good choice and did improve exhaust flow even with the cat still in place, but it wasn't anything major. They did say that if the exhaust needed to be replaced it would be a better choice over a stock replacement, but if it didn't need it there were other places to spend the approximate $1000 other than the exhaust pipe.

All good advice above but I would have to disagree with one point, if you can get EFI Live even if it costs more up front it is worth it. Do it right once, and I see you did so congrats. This is by no means in any way to say anything bad about Mads or the Smarty, I ran one for years and got great support from Marco and Bob. Its a great product but a JR or SR doesn't have the capability of EFI Live. That said UDC is getting close and shows Mads commitment to being at the top.
But anything a Sr or Jr can do can be written by a good EFI Live tuner or yourself if you wish and purchase a V2, then cleaned up and maximized. Its a whole different world when you can data log and get custom tunes, simply a game changer.

EFI Live or Mads UDC nothing else should be considered on an 06-07.5, nothing.

For more info for anyone interested I have a rather lengthy EFI Live thread. For those of you who don't have the proper year for EFI Live, check out the UDC and some results from custom tuners. I'm telling you after running box tuners, stacking, running multiple compounds, pumps and set ups the most impressive thing I have come across since I started spending way too much money in the diesel game is Data logging, and custom tuning.

I'll get off my soap box, have a good one fellas and be safe.

I personally am running a smarty on my rig. Its ok. I am having upgrading the turbo to feed it more air.

But I am a EFI live guy. My 2007 work truck has a 50 hp tune. She went from lag to hold on the oh shat handle. the truck also weighs 12500 pounds.

Another work truck got EFI live with deletes. Went from 10 mpg to 16-17 mpg with the 50 hp tune.

im lucky to have a boss that is a diesel man and has tried every chip/programmer around and EFI has performed the best for us. With a fleet of duramaxes and cummins only. trucks that see a lot of abuse in the oil field and sitting in H2s gas all day. these trucks also tow a lot and I drive an average of 200 miles a day bouncing around in the field and the EFI live has never let me down yet

Then I have a few buddies running the 230hp tune on a dirtymax and I am jealous.
