whats the BEST ATF then for DTT / ATS
whats the BEST ATF then for DTT / ATS
so if you can't use ATF4 fld.. AMSOIL is and schaeffers and some other high quality stuff.. then what is the best ATF3 that you can use in these.. can you go full syn.. I mean if you spent that much on the trans $$$$...
I have been using amsoil in my dtt for the past 70k and no problems at all. You could call the trans builder DTT or ATS and ask them what brands they recommend. Bill at DTT filled my trans with dex when he did mine. At the first service interval I switched back to amsoil. I did notice the shifting was a bit less crisp. Not as sharp as with the dex.
If I recall dex has the least amount of friction modifier in it so I guess technically it could be called slip but it is not slipping like you would normally think. Think of it as a more gentle clutch engagement instead of slip.
thats what I said about schaeffers and my 48RE - Tim Holt (bless his soul - and he knows and I don't).. stated that smoother shifting in these trans is not good.. it means the clutches are slipping..
Interesting point....just did the tranny in my truck....48RE, "full race" and we used the Amsoil in it from new, seems to shift funny too....anyone out there with the full DTT race tranny have anything to share?

Most all atf's that are synthetic and others(atf3-4) which people use contain friction modifiers that smooth out the engagement of clutches(tc, gears,od, ect). Dextron III is diffrent in that it does not contain any modifiers and is a straight aft fuild allowing for positive engagement of the gears(think of it as an on-off switch without delay sort of speak).

Dave Goerend has a huge drum of III in his shop that they put in all Dodge trannies that leave his place. They put in a small bottle of additive and thats it. I have heard from a few used car dealers that switch to this fliud and some additive to take out the "jerky" feel of all chrysler trannies they get to sell in cars and trucks.I'll have to check but I believe its Dextron III in that drum, I remember being surprized that was what they used.
ATF +4 is what has been recommended for ALL newer Chrysler vehicles. This is not a one size fits all deal. The newer fluid is actually MUCH more refined, synthetic, and will resist breakdown much better. It can be purchased in most auto parts stores.
