External tests make me more confortable due to biases, but in-house tests can be helpful too. I voted for All of the Above.

Scotty,

Comparative sound level measurements would help, too. All the young bucks might like turbo whine and whistle, but those of us old geezers who pull RVs are sensitive to significantly increased noise levels when spending days on the road. It makes it harder to hear our Lawrence Welk CDs!

I'd like to see before and after oil analyses. I think that is the best way to determine how a filter works in the real world.

I modded my stock airbox and kept stock filter. How about a comparison to that. I just don't see the money spent on aftermarket airboxes/filters as necessary even when "bombed".
