Water Injection Question
Water Injection Question
Looking for opinions on pure water injection for 600 cummins. You can see what mods I have in my signature. Just wondering if this would be worth doing on a mildly bombed truck ?? Can anyone give me the pros and cons of this system, and also will it have any detrimental effects overall on the motor in the long run. Also, can you piece together your own kit from scratch, or is it better to buy a kit for your particular application. I was wondering how these systems know to kick on at a certain boost and increase to a maximum boost. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
matt

I wouldn't bother with pure water at all. You really can't run much of it through the motor without bogging. Run at least 20-25% meth and you can run a whole lot through, and it makes a big difference in EGT and power.
I've been running water/meth for almost 9 months and I love it. I'm not sure I would bother with it on a truck that doesn't have EGT issues, that's why I run it. The extra kick in the pants sure is a nice bonus though.
People who have run a lot more through their motor than I have report water in the oil. I had problems with that (mayo on the dipstick
) due to just letting the truck idle after using the system instead of flogging it a little to dry everything out. Once I learned to romp on it after using the system, the water went away.
The system I have uses an electronic controller with a boost sensor. There are two adjustments, start pressure and full pressure (pressure here meaning boost, not water pressure). The controller starts the pump at 50% duty cycle (rapidly switches the power on and off, about 10x per second - the higher the duty cycle, the longer the power is on during a given tenth of a second) and gradually ramps it up until boost reaches the full delivery pressure at which point it runs the pump at 100% duty cycle. This makes for a very smooth running system, it's totally transparent whan you are driving.
Lower priced systems and home built setups use a Hobbs switch, which is an adjustable pressure switch. You adjust the switch to turn the pump on at whatever boost level you want. It's full on or full off, so it's not as smooth. It's kinda like somebody hit the nitrous button.
You can see the dyno results in my signature. The 1600 degree pyro pegged on the #2 only run, with water/meth it only hit 1400 degrees.
