turbo shaft play

Hey guys,

About 10,000 miles ago I put on my AFE Pro Guard 7 filter on (vs. pro guard 5) and the condom and drove it in extreme dust and bad conditions. The filter on the outside and its condom looks horrible. When I took the filter off and the tube, there was no dust inside, so that made me very happy. I use some non hardening silicone grease on the rubber joints at the turbo and tube/filter (as this traps dust) and its obviously working good, and the pro guard 7 is working much better then the pro guard 5 did. Overall, very happy.

However if I wiggle the shaft on the turbo, it has some play. I'm not sure how much play is normal.

Truck drives good and no driveability issues to report, but it has seen lots of WOT, lots of boost and about 40k miles w/edge juice w/attitude. I do have an mp8 stack, but i don't use it very much.

How much play is "normal" and how much is "too much", and what would be a good single turbo uprage for me? I need more boost obviously, but i don't want to gain too much lag in the process. Truck has 3.73s and 37s (soon 35s), so bottom end is important to me.

I think my next set of mods must be a booster lift pump and new turbo.

What would you guys recommend in case I need to start saving or buying a new turbo soon.

Thanks,

Igor.

im not sure, but i was told that the shaft glides on a thin layer of oil when the shaft is spinning. when it cools down and the oil drains the shaft will have some play in it. i was worried about the same thing for a while, but ill run it until it goes.

For a stock turbo on a Cummins common rail the shaft play spec is about
.020" side to side. There should be no to .005" in out play.

pourin....does your 5000 have any shaft play in it?
i installed my new turbo and the first time to the track i blew my intercooler. i have to drive 25 miles home. i got home and pulled the intake and everything looked good, but i pulled the charge pipe and there was a little bit of oil in the pipe. so i checked the shaft and there was a little play in it, but when you spin the shaft alittle and check it the play is reduced to nothing. the people i bought it from said that was normal. i dont know

Yeah the Aurora will have almost no side to side play for some reason.
But....The Aurora out of the box can and will have some in out play up to the .020" area.

My Aurora has less radial play than any Holset I've had and I can't feel any endplay - just like the Holsets. Craig
