Turbo Shaft Play

I noticed today that my turbo shaft has some up and down play in it. I'm guessing 1/32" to maybe 1/16" (i didn't have a precise way to measure it). There isn't any rub marks on the inside so nothing is hitting. Also this is on the intake side.
Is this normal?
Thanks
Will

It's normal if it has a lot of miles. How many miles does it have? 1/16th is quite a bit, you might want to consider rebuilding it.

As long as it isn't hitting the housing it's probably ok.
Side to side specs are .013 - .02
Fore to aft is more important, specs .001-.005
A little movement can feel like a lot

The truck has 177,000 miles on it. Is there a kit to do the rebuild? How hard of a process is it?
I can't "feel" any fore to aft movement, it feels tight that way. There are no marks in the housing where it hit so i'm sure it hasn't made any contact.
I'll have to buy a good set of calipers and get a more accurate reading.
Thanks
Will

As long as its not rubbing the housing, i'd say just leave it alone. It should be fine. If you do decide to do rebuild it, its not that hard of a process, just takes a little time. IIRC they can be had for around $100 but im not positive.

For right now I am just going to keep an eye on it. This might be an excellent excuse to tell the wife that I need to upgrade the turbo.

dont worry about the up and down play the shaft rides on a cushion of oil if you could duplicate oil pressure and cheak it, it would have no play
