Tst S/w Edge Ez

Ive noticed alot of people on here are stacking the edge with the tst box, and i wanted to know is it really any better to stack the two? And if so im assuming that the ones that are stacking them are running either twins or a bigger turbo. Just woundering because i cant take full advantage of the tst by its self, much less both together. EGT's are killing me.

Believe it or not, you can actually achieve the most HP with the two stacked together. For a given HP, the EGT's are lower with the EZ than without it.

Since the EZ raises the pressure in the rail, you get more fuel for a given pulse width. This means you can back off the duration on the TST, and get more fuel into the cylinder earlier (it's the long duration times that really affect EGT's).

In my dyno tests, I could squeeze about 450HP out of a TST alone, on level 7. With the EZ on level 4, and the TST on level 5, I was up +40HP (490HP), with EGT's about 50°F lower.

This was with a larger single turbo. You're right - you can't expect to get more than 40-50% out of a TST with a stock turbo (reliably, at least). However - the concept above applies regardless of what turbo you're running.

Hey,

I had the same question until I got my TST last week. I don't have the 2004.5, but I have the 2004. I already had the EZ, but decided to move to the TST. The EGT's as you are seeing were high with the stock turbo. I decided to see if the power curve felt different with the Edge stacked. It did, the bottom end seemed to liven up a bit. Low and behold, I also saw a drop in EGT's. It seemed to be somewhere in the neighborhood of about 100 degrees.

Of course, don't run the TST quite as high with the Edge box while using the stock turbo. My problem now is that my clutch is slipping. I'll probably be ordering a new South Bend dual disc 3600-6 from PDR tomorrow to solve that problem.

Hope this helps!

David

Thats good news. Im in the early stages of bombing my truck, and was trying to figure out what next step to take. I am looking to reach that 500 hp mark one day, so would going with the ez be a good next step? And how much does the edge ez cost?

Truthfully? No. You're starting to fall into the BOMBing trap... adding the "go-fast" pieces before beefing up the supporting components. Get a good intake first (like a Scotty RA3). Then think about a turbo (for 500HP, a good single is fine). That 48RE isn't going to hold up to much beyond 400HP, which you're at right now. At a minimum, get a new converter and valve body... later you can transfer those to a new transmission (for 500HP, a stock trans with TC/VB upgrades is pretty marginal, if not inadequate).

I know this isn't what you want to hear... you'd rather spend money on things that makes the truck go faster. But, a couple of grand spent up front on the less "fun" parts will save you many times that if you blow something up because it wasn't up to the task.

When I started building my truck, 500RWHP was my target as well. With that in mind, I did the intake, exhaust, turbo, fuel, and transmission BEFORE ever adding a power-enhancing box. Sure, it wasn't much fun spending close to $8K and realizing 40HP, but the last $1K produced about 210 additional HP, and it was the best kind around.... RELIABLE HP.

Just some food for thought... good luck

I know your right about one thing i have the bomb bug, and I have only 8000 miles on my truck. Did you wait untill your waranty expired before you bombed your truck? It sure is hard to take a new truck, and start upgrading TC/VB's, and turbo's. I think i will take your advise, and wait on anymore hp upgrades so at least i can get waranty work done.

Stack the EZ and TST it works very well with no issues on my 04.5.
I dynoed 462hp with the stock turbo stacked.

What egt's are you running with them stacked? Are you getting lower egt's with same amount of hp? And how much did you pay for your EZ?

I waited about a year before doing anything major - intake and exhaust came pretty quickly... turbo at about 8 months/10K, trans and fueling boxes around 20K. I wasn't too concerned about warranty. I subscribe fully to the "I am my own warranty station" school of thought... however I still expect my warranty to cover things unrelated to my modifications (A/C evaporator starts leaking, for example).

What's more important is to make sure the engine is fully broken-in before turning up the power. If you work the truck, it'll be broken in by about 10K. If you baby it, it could be upwards of 30K.

so at least i can get waranty work done.
Again, I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but if anything powertrain-related happens, and you take your truck in with a TST hanging on it - be prepared for a negative response. Even if you remove the TST, a tech who knows what he's looking for will notice that a fueling box was present.
