TST = Too much timing, especially when cold.
When my truck is cold my TST is giving me too much timing and it rattles really bad once I hit that 12 psi mark. It doesn't matter how low I go on the settings except for 0/0. Anybody else have this problem? It pretty much goes away once I reach operating temp.
Also, if I get the twins flash, will the timing come on sooner? I know it fuels sooner but haven't heard anything about the timing. I may get the adjustable timing option if I get the box reflashed.

Why are you driving that hard when cold? I never let my truck build boost over 9-10 psi when cold. The engine warms up pretty quick...at least 170 or so before I push that hard on the go pedal. I have never experienced the problems you are having.
The injectors and EZ will also effectively advance the timing...just take it real easy till she warms up a little.

Dzilla, My longest warm up is 30 seconds before I start to roll even at -20 deg. C. Yep it sounds like a second gen until you get to 3rd gear. I can't get to 2nd gear until I rattle up to 2400rpm which is sometimes 20psi given that the tranny is frozen. Sometime I have to go to 3000rpm if its really cold. I try to get over the hill near my house before I start accelerating on the downhill to get a gear shift, 1/8 of a mile. Once I hit third the truck starts to warm up and within a couple of miles the rattle is cut in half and then the truck hits the low marker on the ok range and all is good. I don't mind the sound at all. It is highly suggested to not run above 1 on power before the truck is warmed up. Others will chime in that "heck I run 9x9 all the time...even under water" but common sense prevails on my trucks life. I use synthetic oil and I know it gets everywhere that it needs to be within a few seconds of starting. My exhaust rarely puts out white or grey smoke even in the coldest of weather for more than a minute. Its worked for the first 133k miles so hopefully it will do for the next 133k miles. ks

just let the truck warm for about 2min before leaving out...with that said with tone ring ez and tst mine is louder when cold than even a 01 24v...i just let the truck warm for a short time and no problems...a side note: check engine light came on today i guess its the tst box

The simple answer is that upon reaching 2 psi of boost the TST module starts to advance timing at any level. On setting 1/x it is timing only. It does not fully advance timing until about 12 degrees. I believe the unit I have does 3 deg at 2psi and up to 12 degress at 12 psi. This is the standard TST program on a 2005 truck.
Now the reason it rattles when it is cold is because the factory program on the Cummins also advances timing when the engine is cold to eliminate emissions. Adding these two together makes it rattle.
To make it stop either turn it off or get our monitor when it fully suports the TST and set the warm up protection mode. Once you set this mode you can decide between 120-180 degrees when you want the power to arrive. It also won't just abruptly add the power, it waits until the parameter are right and then turns it on so it does not jerk or happen during a shift. The warm up mode is the same for any module, we just don't fully support the TST....YET.
With all of that said the timing when it is cold will most likely not hurt the truck it just sounds bad. These engines are very conservative on timing from the factory, that is why it is reasonably simple to gain mileage with them.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's kind of hard to get up to 65mph without getting run over by the traffic so I need to give it a little go pedal which sometimes gets me past 12psi. You also get tired of having to turn the box off everytime it's cold. I kind of miss my Quad box.....

Actually, the reason the factory advances timing on a cold engine is NOT to reduce emissions. At least, not when cold.
The factory advances timing to take heat out of the exhaust and get it into the engine. The idea is to get the engine up to temp as fast as possible.
Warm engines have better emissions.
So the timing sort of is for emissions, and sort of isn't. Advanced timing in a cold engine has TERRIBLE emissions, but it's still better than if the engine is allowed to take forever to warm up.
That's their theory anyway.
Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest this, as we NOrthern folks can attest to how stinky exhaust is putzing around town in cold weather behind cars that haven't warmed up yet.
Apparently this is a problem with the 03 and 04 trucks and that's one of the reasons for the new adjustable timing setup they have.
I usually start out with the box turned off but sometimes I forget and the truck sure lets me know it!!!!
This box sure is sensitive........
