Question Tranny Upgrade Advice

My 47RE is the next scheduled upgrade, but I have one last question. I’ve done the research and have decided to go with a torque converter and valve body verses an entire new tranny and have picked my brand as well.

The “Big Three” aftermarket tranny folks offer these parts separately or you can opt for a complete transmission rebuilt with those parts and some other little goodies. I have talked to some folks about the extra parts and other changes they make to the complete transmissions that they offer, but I have reservations about whether: 1. I need all of that. 2. I really need all of that. They all make good points but I have to remind myself that they are also trying to sell a product when I consider the cost difference between a TC & VB verses a complete new tranny.

My goal is 400 HP, I tow 8K max, and most of my driving is city driving…all-be-it hard city driving. I’m no drag racer but pretty tough from stop light to stop light (just a lot of fun). From the research I have done, an aftermarket torque converter and valve body should be all that I need and good ones should last a lifetime under these conditions.

Are there any major benefits to purchasing a new complete tranny with all the extra little things they do? I don't think I'm missing anything. I just can’t get past the significant difference in cost between the two options coupled with the fact that I think I will be fine with the lesser. Please advise! Thanks.

I can only speak of Bill K. Call him to get it from him, but I believe he says the vb and converter up-grades can be done before power is added and if you have under 20,000 miles.
There is always a better total package with the complete trans conpaired to partial.
He will give it to you straight and honest.

I had a 2000 model with the 47RE and I did the TC/Valve Body only like you are suggesting and it worked great also. Towing no more than you are I believe you'll be just fine. It makes one heck of a big difference.

Once Again

I agree. With what you are planning to do, a TC and VB will be just about right.

Similar Uses but 48RE

What about a similar usage situation? I plan on putting out around 400-425 on my 04 HO and do mostly city and some long highway drives. Usually tow 5k (when i tow) every now and then ill get to maybe 9-10k. I have heard that the 48RE is a good tranny but far from perfect. Would the same solution say VB and TC be the answer for me as well? Keeping in mind that i have 13000 miles on her now.

Another 47RE. It's been a couple of months since you posted this thread, what did you decide to do and how do you like the result? Rebuild or buy a remanufactured in the box unit, I am currently puzzling over the same question.
