Towing egt

Towing egt
First time I took the trailer on a long trip this weekend. The trailer is a 26 foot toyhauler and weighs around 7000 empty. It probably weighed around 8500 this weekend since it didn't have quads. My question is this. When I am traveling down the freeway and the tranny is in tow/haul it will go in to overdrive and the egt's will go to around 1100 going 60 mph, 10 psi of boost and around 1450 rpms, and this is flat level freeway. I didn't like the egts that high so I locked the overdrive off and then the truck revs to around 2200rpms and 22psi boost and egts come down to around 700. I know my mpg are going down at 2200rpm's. The truck just lugs along fine at 1450rpms and I am probably getting better mileage but the egts are higher because of low boost. I have 3.73 rearend and should of ordered 4.10's because I know I messed everything up putting the 35" tires on. So here it is, what scenario is the best low rpms/higher egts or higher rpms/lower egts. The pyro was only at 1100 but is this healthy for the engine? Also I had the superchips flashpaq and sold it due to traceability, I am considering the Smarty or Quad xzt. Will these help with the egts? I would only be running sw3 on the smarty until a v/b t/c. Any responses or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

as long as your EGTs are under 1400 ish for extended periods you'll be fine. These trucks run pretty warm. i wouldn't worry about it at all. I see 1400* almost everytime I drive my truck and its been that way for 70 000 kms so far no issues.

When i'm towing i try to keep the RPM above 1600, drop down a gear if you have to, anything below that is getting into lugging territory, you should also see a drop in temps with the higher engine speed.

Cant say with towing, but for unloaded driving, the smarty runs cooler egt's at all throttle positions....where as i could get to 1400* + on a stock truck, i havent seen over 1200* with the smarty on level 3. It may be different with the extra fuel on the hills towing??

The smarty can lower your temps at certain levels but once you get one you'll want more and before you know it you'll be on level 9 and egt skyrocket then unless you have supporting mods.

Personally I would go with the higher RPM/Lower EGT scenario. 1450rpms is just under prime torque band. If you are at 1100 degrees on flat ground, it will only get worse in the hills. I would also bet that your mileage will not be that far off with OD locked out. Based on your #'s it seems like your truck is also having a much easier time pulling with O/D locked out. The OD off button is there for this exact reason, to keep the motor working in it's max torque range.

The 06 cummins engines (not sure when this started) are designed to run higher internal temperatures. The pistons have a special coating. The engine has better cooling with more water capacity and thicker blocks. The pistons have better cooling from enhanced oil spray. The 06 engines even have a different exhaust valve setting, .026 VS. .020 in earlier years. It would be cool (no pun intended) to see someone set the exhaust valve at .018 and see if they run even cooler than previous models. If anyone is considering this they will have to remove the cat. The cat is the reason for the increase in internal cylinder temperatures.
You can run 1300*F for 500,000 miles straight without hurting the engine any more than if you ran at 600*F straight. The idea of lugging an diesel engine is booguse. As long as your not slowing down while trying to speed up your not lugging. In other words as long as you can push on the throttle and gain speed your not lugging the engine.
I can guarantee that at 1100*F preturbo the engine is barely warm for these diesel engines.
I can also guarantee that you will consume alot more fuel running higher RPM's.
